2049.0. "Smelly Shoes" by MEMIT::HO () Mon Jun 21 1993 13:44

Haarken boats shoes smell pretty awful after a hot day on the water.

I'd hate to be on a long summertime cruise wearing them.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this, besides buying Topsiders?

Throw them in the washer with a little bleach to kill the mildew. Use
foot powder from then on. Allow to dry properly after getting wet.
Rinse with fresh water after being in salt water.

I of course did none of these things and and need to keep my feet
well to leeward at all times.

    Gene,

Buy OMEGA boat shoes. They have a removable insole that you can wash.

Or you can try to relax more when you race, you'll sweat alot
    less. :)

Caution unless they have changed the foam they use Bleech and heat
will cause it to self destruct. My harken shoes have years left on the
soles and leather areas. The cloth covered foam broke down in less
than 2 years. Also you can remove the inner soles on some of the
Harken shoes. I have a friend his died in less than 1 year his SO
washed them in bleech and killed the foam....

I have the Omega XT with removable liners and have washed them using
bleach in relatively strong concentrations. No adverse affects yet.
The liners are generally a molded cross linked polyethylene. Anyone
with a working knowledge of chemistry should be able to determine
compatability. I don't and therefore can't so I takes my chances.
The insole should also be replaceable either from the manufacturer or
    Dr. Scholls et al.
