2048.0. "Time to start planning a party?" by MARX::CARTER () Fri Jun 18 1993 16:40

Taking my cue from note 377, and from a previous successful raft-up
arranged by the inimitable Mr. John (cycle1) Carver of exploding
Barient 10P fame, I am proposing a sailors' get together, or rather, a
    boaters' get together.

Figuring if we start this note soon enough, we have a bit of a shot at
    making this happen again.

What? A raft-up or group of boats congregating in a common achorage.

When? I suggest the weekend after the fourth of July.

Where? Being a bit parochial, and sailing out of Salem, Ma. I could be
tempted to suggest Misery Island, the scene of the
aforementioned successful get together several years ago. But,
Boston Harbor is also a distinct possibility, if that would
make life easier for a greater number of participants.

    Who? Boaters. Wannabe boaters.

Why? Why not? Get out and meet some of the people who you "see"
in notes, but not in person.

So, if anybody thinks this is a good idea, reply here, and we'll make
    it happen.

Nearly every year somebody proposes this, and nearly every year we
    manage to *not* do.

I'm in for Sunday the 11th. Sat the 10th is iffy. Misery sounds
    great with me.

2048.2Another taker....WONDER::BRODEURMon Jun 21 1993 09:5016
Either Sat or Sun, July 10 or 11 is fine with me. I'll be there with
boat, dog, and whatever else I pick up along the way. Being from Salem
also, Misery sounds great to me. Should only take me 45 mins or so to
motor out there :*) Course, Boston would not be out of the question
should that excite a larger number of particpants. Depending on my luck
(or lack of it....) I may have rooms for one or two others if you are
without vessel but would like to attend.

    See y'all there!

    Paul

ps. dave, can I raft with you so I don't have to pull that big heavy
anchor outa my cockpit locker? I'm getting to old for that stuff!

Great Miz is only about 3 hours from Boston, and a damn fine place.
Not usually overcrowded on the north (-east?) side.

Dave (C3) made me write this.....

As the originator of the raft up concept (I think), I guess I can't
say no to the idea. I vote for Sat the 11th at Misery Island.

Beginnings has new a new furling system and 150 jib so we can get
    there fast !

Will this be the year that our moderator also puts in an appearance ?!

Looking forward to seeing everyone !

2048.55 boats so far...MARX::CARTERThu Jun 24 1993 13:1522
So far looks like we have Scott, John K, Paul, John C, and me, sorta
planning to get together July 10/11 in the vicinity of Misery Island in
Salem Sound. Probably we'll aim for the Manchester-by-the-Sea side of
Great Misery, depending on the prevailing wind.

How about you other North Shore boaters? Heck, Scott isn't
a North Shore boater, and it sounds like he's ready for good time.
It'll be interesting to meet Scott after seeing as many of his notes as
    I have.

Ya Paul, you can raft up, as long as you really have Buk along.

Last time we did this we had a raft of about nine boats at one point. Of
course we broke the raft apart after dinner, before bedding down for the
    night.

I'll have my dinghy. If Paul brings his dinghy, we'll have couple of
dinghys so people can go ashore if the company on the boats gets
    boring.

    	Boring sailors? No such thing!!

Great Miz is a FINE volleyball island- somebody comes out and mows
the grass; it's like a hilly golf course!!

there's always swimming... bottom scrubbing... fishing... eating
too much... tropical drinks and lifeline line dances to Buffet's

We are not even in the water yet. Got near the top of Jubilee YC wait list, so
delayed launching till that firmed up.

Also getting caught up on much delayed house painting, re-siding, and major
landscaping.

WIND SONG will not get her bottom wet until weekend after Misery and that will
be for 2 weeks up in Somes Sound. We will then trailer back to Beverly and
launch at Jubliee.

2048.8Where's Somes Sound?MARX::CARTERMon Jun 28 1993 13:4423
    Fred,

A July rendevous should set the stage for the next one. If we get
enough tall tales told, war stories re-lived, and other hijinks tended
to, we'll want to do it again before next year.

Don't say house painting and landscaping so loud. Some of us could get
    guilty consciences, if so inclined.

On the lines of the weekend after the fourth of July get together,
Sunday is looking like a better day for both John K, and John and Cindy
    C. The owner of an Irwin from the area also seems to think Sunday
could be less problematic for his crew's interest. Maybe we're working
towards a quorum for Sunday, I dunno.

Other years we have either found each other, or said we should find
each other by the article of underwear flying from the rigging. That
may be the approprite burgee for this get together, too.

Let's hope for decent weather for this get together, and the next one.

2048.9Is it a go for Sunday, the 11th?MARX::CARTERWed Jul 07 1993 17:2523

    The time draws near.

The long range outlook is for decent weather on Sunday July 11, as far
as sunshine and temperature goes. I've heard nothing about anticiapted
wind strength or direction. This morning NOAA said sunny and in the
high 70s or low 80s on SUnday. Saturday is still forecast to be hazy
hot and humid, with a possibility of t-showers in the p.m.

Shall we plan to convene on the Manchester side of Great Misery any
time after 1000 on Sunday? That should give guys like Scott from the
harbor further south, a chance to get there sort of at his leisure.

Ilze and I may spend the night there on elysium on Saturday, but heck the
way weather patterns run around here, we could have a front come through
    making this all moot.

We can plan to communicate using channel 72 if plans change, like if
the wind makes the Manchester side of Misery uncomfortable.

    Dave

Went scouting yesterday (ie I took a vacation day and went sailing).
The weather reports are suppose to be the same for Sunday and
Saturday. Just like yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Light breezes from the
S-SW 4-6 knts. About 4:30 a sqawl came through. the water had
no wave action. Winds near the the shore were non-existant, but there
was some wind near Misery and Bakers Island.

I am taking the Catamaran out Saturday, but will be there Sunday
morning on the monohull. See you then.

Whoops strategy change- I'm going to be headed south, rather than
north, for my vaca. So you guys will have to hoist one for me.

I'm heading for Block Is. by way of Buzzards Bay & Newport. Hope
the crowds aren't as intense as they say!! After that, we'll buzz the
    Elizabeths and Nantucket.

Plan another raft for late season- I'll grab a couple of South
    Shore crazies for good measure.

Alan, Sorry to hear of your physical problem. Hope its no more than a season's
worth.

sweatin buckets getting WindSong loaded and ready for her transport to the
cool waters of Somes Sound.

An aside, Bill and Lee French are gonna stop by while we are up at the sound.
For any other travlin or crusin DEC Boaters who per chance are in the Mt Desert
Area between July 17th and July 22nd we would be glad to get together.

the Somes Village dock and behind Sheeps Island site C13. two sites to the
left of the camp ground dock. Office phone is 207-244-3710. By road, 1/2 mile
from light on route 198.

As we did last year, the offer holds for any cruisers up that way in need of
assistance or transport to a full sized market etc we will have ground
transport avail.

If you call the office be sure to indicate the urgency (if thats the case) and
they will make an extra effort to reach us.

2048.14A great time was had by allAKO539::KALINOWSKIMon Jul 12 1993 14:1221
Well Folks, you missed a great one. Nice day, Nice wind, Nice Company.

Couldn't raise a soul on the radio so we sailed around Misery. We knew
we found the party when we saw a HUGE set of boxer shorts flying proud.
At first we thought it was a 10 minute race flag, but the island being
directly upwind told us to take a second gander.

We got to see the wrong way to set an anchor (not one of our folks !)
and Dave showed us his true passion of sailcraft by becoming a human fender
between two boats where the raftup threatened to let their hulls kiss.

We were having so much fun I didn't notice my outboard slowing leaking
it's last gallon of gas so I got to practice the finer points of
picking up a mooring under sail power without a boat hook (where did
that thing go????) (hint if you duct tape the sink pump top to a
paddle, you have a half way decent boat hook).

Thanks to Dave Carter for putting this shindig together

    Until the next one !!!!
    john
2048.15Flying proud, indeedMARX::CARTERFri Jul 16 1993 18:1624
    Sunday was a good time.

Ya, I got to play fender (fenders do float, don't they) even though
neither hull was my own. But it was worth it. A good group of people,
and great weather, as John said.

We actually got to see two boats give live anchoring demonstrations. One
forty plus foot sloop with a very experienced (racing) skipper did a great
job of setting the anchor on the first try. Just before snubbing the line
down, the distaff part of the crew asked the skipper if it would be more
appropriate if the anchor rode went under the lifelines rather than over
    them.

The second anchoring demonstration involved a fair-sized performance
oriented power boat. They came into the anchorage, let out about 21
feet of scope in a 20 foot deep spot, then proceed to drag the anchor
and rode back across the anchorage at 15 knots in reverse, as they
    tryed to set the hook.

I guess our proximity to the island, and maybe some inattention to the
radio made it difficult for folks to contact us. Glad the underwear,
discretely flying from the spreaders helped folks find us.

Thought this note would be as good a place to post this.

Is anyone else suffrin from cabin fever?

I have access to copies of the SAILING QUARTERLY VIDEO MAGAZINE that Gary Jobson
hosts. I also have a good sized conference room with a VCR available.

I would be happy to start a weekly lunch video session for the folks in the
Greater Marlboro Area. Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday are currently OK for me.

Please send me mail to USDEV::DARROW if you are interest and note if you have
any preference of the those three days. If there is any interest, I will post
the schedule in a reply to this note.

These same Videos are currently being shown on the first Monday evening of each
month in Lexington by the Charles River Power Squadron. All are welcome,
contact me for more info.

Also in regard to the base note, Dave Carter, Are you gonna set up another
Misery Island rendezvous this year? The same weekend, weather permitting,
will work for me. Due to shrinking staff we are taking vacation in shorter
segments this year. In addition we will not be draggin WINDSONG up to
Maine this year.

    Fred,

    re .16:

Last time I planned the raft up at Misery, I got wet. When Carver
arranged it nobody got wet. Maybe he ought to do this one, too.

Ya, I think maybe we'll try to arrange a get together this year.
Assuming "we" are still around for that sort of thing. The times we've
gotten together I've enjoyed myself and met some interesting folks.
Heck, if we work it right, maybe our moderator will prove that he
really does have a sailboat, and he can show up for the third annual
occassional sailor's raft up at Misery.

Lunches are a bit of a challenge for me to get out to watch videos, but
I could use a sailing fix about now. My ride on the New Year's Day
race was cancelled because the marina where the boat is berthed was
    frozen over. major bummer.

2048.20winter con-fab in Groton 13 febAKO539::KALINOWSKIFri Jan 14 1994 10:5656
    re .19

The reason Dave got wet is he always heard don't jam your foot or
hand between two boats. He figured all that was needed was more size, so
he decided to use his entire body. ;>)

Once safely back on board, there was a general concurance among the
"riff-rafters" that Dave's physique had nothing in common with those
inflatble mermaid fenders less those scuff marks from many years of
    hard use. ;>) ;>)

Gee Dave, if you really want to go sailing, you know I'll let you
use the catamaran. just pull up the centerboards as they don't pop
out of the way like the rudders when you hit a patch of floating ice
(speaking from experience!) ;>). The Hobie is clean but getting out of
yard is going to take a bit of finese with these here snow banks.

Lunches are hard for me too, but I think all us polar-sailors need
a fix now and then. 2 years ago we had a good turnout in Boxbough after
    work.

I will offer a winter con-fab at my house in Groton on sunday the 13th
of Feb. I find this is the worst part of winter as the football games
are over, but it is too early to be working earnestly on the boat.
You bring your own liquid refreshments, and I'll supply the
    entertainment and munchies.

I live on the Mass/NH border about 9 miles from LKG, 7 miles from ZKO
and 14,387 miles from TKO. Any of you sailing over for this gala event,
let me know, and I'll reserve a slip at my marina for you.

I have a large screen TV and can pick up some of the really relivent
sailing videos from Boat US for a sail fix (and I don't mean Mutiny on
the Bounty). For those that want to try virtual reality, you can watch
from the deck while someone sprays you with a hose. Just don't forget
    your own foul weather gear.

We can pratice those natical terms like "PORT!" or "Stop Luffing" or
"Hey, get me a cold one willya???" .

We can drag some lines out to show off knot tricks, and maybe even
have a sail changing contest to see who can unbag, attach lines and
then refold/bag a jib. Semi-finalist do it blindfolded.

I am even big enough to let any of you help sand/varnish my tiller
and layboards. Always good to loosen up prior to diving into your
    own projects.

If you are interested, please send me mail at akocoa::kalinowski so
I can get a headcount on this. If a different day is better for you,
please put it in. I will be getting back to the interested folks via
mail around the 2nd of Feb with directions etc.

So I hope to hear from any of you who are interested.

A bunch of us got together a John and Vera's house yesterday. Finding
the place was easy enough, just look for the mooring pick-up buoy which
was flying something pretty close to the club burgee. A blue bathing
suit worked a lot better than standard issue skivies, with all the snow
    around.

John assembled quite an eclectic mixture of people; mono-hullers,
catamaran fanatics, racers, cruisers, in-betweeners, trailer-sailors,
digits and people with real jobs, males and females. Tons of really good
food, to go with the company.

Those who weren't there not only missed the food, but between and during
the videos we probably talked about you. John went off and rented some
tapes, but we did so much yacking, that even with the gymongous tv, we
    didn't do much watching.

Thanks for hosting this go-around of the semi-annual, occasional
digital sailors' get-together John. Some time in early to mid-June
it'll be time to do it again, with water under own hulls next time.

Your welcome Dave. Vera and I were happy to accomodate everyone.
I just hope I didn't bore anyone with the commentary and tape of the
Sail Expo 94. The comments expressed were of the producer and not
intended to be critical of any manufacturer (except that overpriced
    Corsair F-41 ;<) ;>) ).

Come June though, I am not sure where the devil I am going to bolt
the projection TV for the ride out to Misery Island ;>) .

For next year's winter confab, hopefully we will have some serious
action shots from the new rear mounted "ralph-cam". If I get enough of
the various noters on board this season, This could be a lot of fun
    with the proper editing.

Well it looks like we have all been working really head, cause no one
has said a word about a raft up. UNTIL NOW......

I guess we should be gunning for the beginning of August when there
isn't enough wind stirring to make bobbing-and-baking a worthwhile
    activity alone.

Seeing how a gen-set would cost more than my boat, we are going to have to
leave the projection TV at home. Besides, it would never fit through
    the companionway.

I just bought a new lifesling and have been teaching my golden

    Ok Folks

After a quick talk with Dave last night, we are going to shoot for
Sunday, Aug 14th off Misery Island, Salem Sound, in Mass off the coast
of Manchester by the Sea. Not sure which side of the island
yet, but it should be pretty easy to pick out with the burpee.

You bring your own food, drinks, stories etc. If you think you might
be able to make it, please leave a note here, so we know how far we
need to keep the other boats away.

We'll monitor channel 72 for anyone needing directions. Once on
site, we'll post loran coordinates when asked. We'll go by the call
    sign DECCIES .

If you would like to attend, but have no boat, or it is
geographically out of range, leave a note here and we'll get you
    a ride out.

Ilze and I will plan to be there. I expect we'll arrive noonish or so.
We're fair weather sailors mostly, so if the weather is real trashy,
that would be unlikely. Let's do a weather check here, late week.

I'll rummage around downstairs to see if I can find my version of the
club burgee. For new comers, the club burgee is one or more
undergarments flying from the rigging, maybe the flag halyard.

Mooring or anchoring at Cocktail Cove gives people with dinghies the
option of going ashore on either island. But, the mooring field on the
Manchester-by-the-sea side of Great Misery is larger. Let's let
the wind direction (if there is any wind) help to decide the location.

Ok Folks, It looks like we are still on for Sunday around noon.

Weather is low 90's with a chance of a t-storm in the late afternoon.
lets hope this part is wrong.......

1st choice will be on the Manchester side. This will keep the wakes
down and the waves from the prevailing South Westerlies.
We will probably anchor out just a bit, and not worry about being
tossed off a mooring. But If we are not there, come around the corner.

Again, we will monitor channel 72 starting around 11, call sign DECCIE.
I have a white Pearson 26 with red cove and boot stripes. It is so
plain looking it is ugly, so it should be easy to spot. I'll have my
inflatible on it's painter in case anyone needs to go ashore.

If this is your first raftup, don't forget to get those fenders out and
have you lines ready for the "riff-rafters" to secure for you. Take
your time and bring a good attitude.

2048.38&^%$# Woodstock....MCS873::KALINOWSKIWed Aug 17 1994 11:2652
Saturday afternoon I raced an incoming storm to wash to boat. 3 weeks
of crud on the topsides. The ride home was fun. The storm hit rt 128 so
hard, my nighttime sailing skills came into play as you could barely
make out red taillights and you really had to know the course for a
quarter of a mile as the torrents hit.

Sunday looked bad according to the Weather Channel. %$#&!! Woodstock.
Don't those idiots know you can't have Woodstock without cold, wind and
lots of rain! My sailing crew decided to foresake me for someone's
house to watch the Woodstock pay-per-view . Double %$#&!! ;>)

The wife and I started out for the boat. After the 3rd wave had trounced
her, she proceeded to make me take her over to the marina for a proper
ride to the boat while I took the inflatible.

We prepared. Winds were at 15 and expecting to hit 25. Felt it too.
Around 11 it came up with a vengence. The boat was shaking on it's
mooring (with only a .5 mile fetch from land). I decided with much
encouragement from the Mrs to hold up til it calmed down a bit. The boats
were vering 45 degrees to each other. I really didn't want to see what
effect this has on normal anchors in a raft-up.

At 11:30 I got a radio message from a Catalina 30 saying they were on
station (WOW!!!) and looking for us. I responding we were standing down
until the wind let up a bit. The clouds now turned Dark Blue (not that
"black like the end of the word", but about 2 shade lighter). We
decided to each lunch first. It took 40 minutes and 15 trys to get the
propane gas grill to ignite and stay on. Every time we lifted the lid
to put on the steaks, the flame blew out!

I tried to raise the Catalina, but the Eddie Chin Memorial Race was using
the same channel and having trouble getting the marks in place (ie they
were hogging up the channel). About 1;30 we got a hail from a Catalina 27
who was on site and looking for us. I explained we were about to cast
off. With just a 100 jib, it took about 40 minutes to do the 5 miles.
We finally rafted up with them and spent 2 hours talking about
boats, storms etc. Then it was off for home. About 3/4 of the way the
wind came up yet again, so we dropped the jib and motored.

To the Catalina 30, I propose we give the Captain Deccie "Boys lets get
    out there award".

I am mulling over the idea of rescheduling this raftup in a couple of
weeks. Looks like I will be overseas the end of Sep and begining
October, so hopefully we can do it before then. Any takers?
This time, I will have my regular and celluar phone number that I can
be reached at. I figure you can call at 10 and see if the event is on.
Having the pre-scheduled channel and the call sign was good, but we
need to be able to communicate prior to getting to our boats.

Too early to get headcounts, but I wanted to make sure you all could

As long as any left over effects of Marilyn are minimal, this will probably
be one of our last outings. We are planning to be out of the water early
in October.

Last forcast I heard this morning called for rain into Friday. Should be
a bit ok for Saturday.

John, have you had any feed back offline?

OR is this gonna be a 2 boat raft up?

We will also listen to 72. "WINDSONG"
Our Cell phone is 617-872-2087.

According to NWS, Marilyn will be gone by thursday. Other rain to
leave by Friday. So weather is looking good.

Hopefully we will get a couple other sailors to come out one last time.
Just hope Mark Kaye doesn't come stalking me cause you guys told him
where to get a garmin 45 cheaper than I directed him to ;>) ;>)

Beginnings is scheduled for haulout on the 29th, so this is a final
weekend for sailing and derigging. If the winds are fair I think we
will most likely opt to sail. Sunday is reserved for boat prep.

We may float on by to say Hi if the event is a on, but we won't promise
    to raft.

Well we had a 2 boat tieup with Fred singlehanding WindSong. Not a
great day to tie up as it was cloudy, cold and very windy. The sail to/from
Misery was really nice though. Not many boats on the water. Yup, it must be
    fall. ;>(

    John,

Sorry Beginnings didn't make it. We ended up not coming out on Saturday
and Sunday was boat haulout prep day. Not a great way to end the
    season.....

    Maybe next year !

2048.66A thought for next yearMILKWY::HEADSL::SAMPSONDriven by the windTue Sep 26 1995 09:589
As far as next year, I would like to suggest somewhere further south.
The Misery islands are a good 70 miles from my mooring and basicly out of the
question for a day sail even if we had ideal reaching conditions, a new main
and the asymetric chute we want. But if you planned it for P-town on a weekend,
that's reachable from Buzzards Bay, Boston, Marblehead/Salem, Scituate all at
approximately the same distance. That might increase attendance. I'm sure we
could Make P-town over night a lot easier than Misery in a day.

2048.67AHOY MATIE!! Winter Confab Feb 11th !!!!!!MCS873::KALINOWSKIThu Jan 11 1996 11:3624

Looking at Winter Confab 96 for Sunday, Feb 11th. That way I
can get to the Sail Expo in NJ for some video, and I will not interfere
with the Boston Boat show starting the 17th.

As usual, everyone is invited to the house to warm up, meet old
sailing buddies as well as new ones, and have a generally good time.
The projector TV is working just fine. If you got videos, please feel
free to bring them along with SO's, ex-DECies etc.

You will be able to see what stripping a hull is about up close and
personal (at least it is to me...). There will also be racing on PC
    (ie Try before you buy).

I will need a headcount, so please send a mail to
STOWOA::Kalinowski letting me know you are coming. From that list I
    will send out detailed instructions.

        Hope to see you there.

Just 10 days until Winter Confab 97 !.

Time to commit so I can get a headcount.
If you are thinking of coming, please send me a mail to
    stowoa::kalinowski
with your name, e-mail address and who you might be bringing along with you.
If you know some of our ex-noting freinds who have gone on to
other challanges, please let them know they too are always invited.

    Thanks
