2042.0. "Need Barlow Winch parts" by AKO539::KALINOWSKI () Wed Jun 02 1993 12:59

    I have a set of Barlow 10 or 15 (forget which) winches for the jib
    sheets on my pearson. One of them died on me Sunday. Feels like the
    pawl is broken, or the spring is shot.

    Before I open it up, anyone know where I can get replacement parts in
    the Boston area for one of these??

     thanks

    john

Boat U.S. in Waltham carries some pawls, but I'm not sure they'll fit a Barlow
winch. I believe they're Barient pawls. I suggest you take it apart so you'll
know exactly what you need, and have the parts in hand to compare when you buy a
replacement.

2042.2Marine Exchange maybe?MILKWY::WAGNERScottWed Jun 02 1993 13:5911

    	You might give Marine Exchange in Peabody a call. 508-535-3212. If
    no good, email me for the Beneteau number in South Carolina. I also
    have this brand of winch. Pawls and springs go all the time;
    replacement should not be that much of a pain.

2042.3loose Allen screws???MR4DEC::RFRANCEYdtn 297-5264 mro4-3/g15Wed Jun 02 1993 18:2811
    John,

    The Allen screws loosen up occassionally. Tighten them down and see if
    that takes care of your problem; otherwise, take them apart, clean them
    and lubricate them.

    	Regards,

    ps: so how about a trip report???
2042.4some internals are same as BariettsAKO539::KALINOWSKIThu Jun 03 1993 10:5312
    Took the winches apart last night. Broken spring on one of the pawls.
    Marine traders said the pawls and springs are the same as the Barietts,
    so I will head down there and get them tomorrow night. Then I will
    clean and regrease the units before assembly.

    Interesting trip. We had really bad weather both days (Sunday and
    Monday), but the boat did pretty well. Better than me (I got seasick
    for 5 hours on Sunday). Luckily I had some really good crew members to
    help me sail it back. Didn't take in a drop of water and we almost
    boarched it once (Nasty wave action ).

    barietts parts fit perfectly (springs and pawls). Replaced a couple of
    each. Took about 1 hours to r&r both winches. They both run beautifully
    now.
