2034.0. "Looking to Share Expenses" by CARTUN::GYOUNG () Mon May 24 1993 13:10

    I'm looking for a boatowner who, for whatever reason, is undecided
    about putting their boat into the water this season. I am interested
    in sharing the operating expenses for the vessel (i.e. mooring, launch,
    insurance, etc.) in return for some use.

    Perhaps this type of arrangement would be enough to make the undecided
    become decided ....... knowing that they can get some financial
    relief, having their boat in the water and available for them to use,
    and not being forced to not sail due to a busy schedule.

    I've done this three times ....... with a Hunter 33, a Catalina 30, and
    a Pearson 36. I have the experience associated with sailing these
    three boats, plus I've attended sailing school and have my own
    14' boat in fresh water in NH that I race a few times per summer.

    I have family .... my wife and son both have attended sailng school;
    we are very consciencious about the vessels we've sailed and treat
    them as if they are our own.

    The arrangement I had for the past couple of years has ended due to the
    fact that the owner sold the boat. I'd like to see if a similiar deal
    can be established within Digital before I go outside.

    Give me a call if you're interested, or if you think you might be
    interested and we can discuss pros/cons/questions.

    Regards

    It sounds as if you have had good experiences sharing expenses on a
    boat.

    I once shared OWNERSHIP of a boat and it turned into a nightmare. Our
    priorities were different on what deserved repair (money). I wound up
    in a situation whereby I would have to shell out my money (no shared
    expense) to get repairs done. My alternative was to let maintenance go.

    I think success depends on the personalities of the people involved.

    I would strongly suggest you talk over your expectations and priorities
    (and use schedule) before committing with anyone.

    In the arrangements I've had, we developed a basis of understanding
    around various events. If I have to get towed, I pay. If the boat
    needs routine maintanence that's the owner's issue ....... if I do
    damage to the boat, I pay the insurance deductible. Schedule hasn't
    been a problem either ....... we simply communicate. You are correct
    in stating that personalities do have a lot to do with the success or
    lack thereof.
