2016.0. "Stars & Stripes (For Sale)" by SWEDE::ROBERGE () Tue Apr 06 1993 14:19

I just received the newest edition of `Upper Deck Authentic Sports
Collectibles' in the mail and on the back inside cover they are
advertising the America's Cup winner `Stars & Stripes' for sale. Here's
what the full page ad says in case there are any interested parties out
    there.

Many dream of owning a sailboat. Only few can own a dream.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
While the 1987 America's Cup winner, Stars & Stripes, is one of the
fastest and most technologically advanced boats ever built, it is also
the symbol of the dreams of many. The men who built it. The men who
raced it. Those who witnessed it's victory-and anyone who has ever been
seduced by the lines of a boat.

$10 million went into it. Imagine what you could get out of it.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
Designed by the renowned Sail America Design Team and built by R.E.
Derecktor of Mamaroneck, New York, the 12-meter Stars & Stripes was
launched from Honolulu in 1986. The result of $10 million in research,
design, and development, this 66' smoke blue aluminum marvel of
engineering boasts a 12' beam, water-line length of 46' and break-
through winged keel. It's 92' mast supports a sail area of 1870 sq.ft.
with a Zapspar custom boom, self-tailing Lewmar winches, spinnaker pole
and Sparcraft racing spars and rigging.* This incredibly fast vessel
crossed the finish line 1:59 ahead of Australia's Kookaburra III,
    winning the 1987 America's Cup.

A part of America's Cup tradition and history.
    ----------------------------------------------
More than an opportunity to own one of the finest boats ever built,
this is a chance for someone to own a unique tribute to American
ingenuity, technology and the glorious tradition of the America's Cup.

    *Call for complete details.

    Asking price....only $500,000.00

As an added bonus sailing maestro Dennis Conner will personally
autograph Stars & Stripes for the new owner.

    Any interested parties out there??

How many "Stars & Stripes" are there, as I thought the big 19 metre
Cat that Dennis raced in the Geneva Bol d'or was also called stars
stripes... Will have to dive back in my photo album to check...

Wishing everyone a good sail over the Easter Week End.

I believe there were at least three. The one for sal, the cat, and the
latest version in the last cup race?

2016.3worst sailboat investment ever?UNIFIX::BERENSAlan BerensWed Apr 07 1993 15:104
re .0:

Gee, I knew sailboats were a poor investment, but 35% annual
depreciation is a bit much!

    12 Meter Cost analysis:

                 30,000 lbs. lead @ .35/lb = $10,500
                 25,000 lbs. alum. @ .50/lb = 12,500
                 10 small winches @ $400 ea 4,000
                  1 dual pedestal winch @ $5000 = 5,000
                                                 ------
                                                $32,000

With no further competitive value, a 12 meter's highest and best use is
    to be a lead mine.

try about $2000 per 2 speed med size.. (the smallest on
a 12-meter)

not that it makes a lot of difference in your cost analysis.

you forgot one other thing about a 12-meter...

they are the ONLY boat that defies the laws of
physics... not only do they create a hole in the
water in which rich folk throw money... but they
are the only hole in the water that appears to be
12-meters in circumference but in real-life is
approx. 2 square miles in width....

2016.8Uses for an old 12...LARVAE::CSOONE::BARKERNE1410ISFri Apr 16 1993 04:5517
In the UK, Richard Matthews, the owner of Oyster Marine, sails the 1987 British Americas
Cup challenger White Crusader in inshore and offshore races.

He has added an Engine, a few bunks and guardrails, and it is rated under CHS. Pitched
against lightweight cruiser racers, the performance is interesting, as it is very fast
upwind, but when it gets to the windward mark and bears away, it doesn't get any faster.
Also the draft can be quite a problem in the shallower areas of the Solent.

They have a huge stock of hi-tech sails, many of them hardly used.

Offshore, the boat is strictly for masochists, as it is seriously wet, but at least they
get to their destination fast.

The other factor to consider is that 12's look very pretty when lined up against all the
other floating caravans on a sunny afternoon, and it really pulls the crowds.

could always convert it for use as a spirited booze barge. Sunset
cruises etc. for $5.00 a head.

That would be mighty interesting- lumpy flat deck full of drunks-
    and no lifelines!

One enterprising group bought Canada I (or II) and True North and last I
heard had them in the Carib. where they had an adventrue holiday
going.... I and my friends would challenge you and your friends to a
week so of 12 metre racing against each other.

The same could be done with S&S and perhaps Kookaburra although it migh
be more interesting to do it with Australia II.
