2004.4 | Looking for Datamarine phone number | ZIGLAR::KMAYES | Starboard! | Mon Jun 27 1994 11:34 | 16 |
| Didn't want to start a new topic so ....
I just tried the Datamarine phone number published in the owners manual
and it doesn't work. Does anyone know if they are still in business,
and if so, what the correct number is? My info says they are in Pocasset
MA.
Thanks in advance. I'm trying to fix my depth sounder (S-200DL), which
may need a new display.
Regards,
Keith
PS. Any advice from knowledgeable depth sounder fixers? The display
always reads 18.8 with an "MSD". At times one can see other numbers
flickering.

| What's the manual say about "MSD". Does this mean the water is deeper
than max range, i.e. the depth sounder didn't hear an echo?
If so, check your transducer connections.

2004.7 | Mine was doing the MSD thing, too | MARX::CARTER | | Mon Jun 27 1994 14:08 | 24 |
| RE: 18.8 and MSD on the Data Marine depth sounder. Mine started doing
that intermittently a couple of years ago. By the end of last season
it was a near-constant condition.
Voyager Marine in Essex (Phone number someplace in this file) replaced
the input (RCA) jack on the display unit. This year I saw the same
sympton on one damp day, and haven't seen it since.
When I brought the unit in to Voyager, I described the problem to the
service folks and they didn't indicate that the symptom would likely be
caused by bad transducer connections. Actually, I think they said my RCA
jack indicated it was shorted. Maybe you could check to see if your
instrument reads the same (all segments lit) when you have disconnected
the cable. If not, maybe the cable or transducer is shorted.
My depth sounder would give me an accurate water depth, even when the
MSD nonesense was happening, if I turned the switch on the back of the
unit to "off" as the power went off, the depth read correctly.
Repairs may cost as much as a new unit, if it gets any more complicated
than the RCA phono jack.

2004.8 | | OTOOA::MOWBRAY | This isn't a job its an Adventure | Mon Jun 27 1994 15:48 | 5 |
| MSD= Maximum Sounding Depth i.e. the device does not hear a "ping"
back. If you are at a depth less than the max then it is likely that
there is a bad connection or deterioration in the coax fromthe unit to
the transducer. A friend of mine had the same problem ... found a
dirty connector and corroded coax .... fixed that and it improved.

| G'day,
Just an update ...
I called Datamarine and described the problem. They said,
without hesitation, that I have a bad LCD. They are sending
me a new one for $27.25 plus shipping.
