1956.0. "Gulfstar problems?" by ICS::WANNOOR () Tue Nov 03 1992 01:11

I hear that the Gulfstar 50 has a bad reputation, but don't know why.
    Any suggestions?

PS: i sailed a gulfstar 51 .. once .. the only time I was happy was
while we were docked... it is a wonderful below deck design... lots of
    room, nicly arrainged... pretty... spiffy...

but as a sailboat..... it leaves much to be desired.

    beamy ..a little too much
LOTS of freeboard ..a little to 'lots'
the rig could use about 5 more feet of height
the mast should be moved back (just a wee bit)
the one I sailed was cutter rigged.. the damn jib kept getting
caught in the rigging every tack.
Actually... better than moving the rig back... get one thats
ketch rigged... I hear it helps... but make sure the mizzen mast
is very close to the main mast in height.

oh... have you ever tried to steer a bar of soap...?
if you've sailied a gulfstar you can say you have. ;)

one other issue... i have heard of 3 and actaully had first hand
experience with one gulfstar that hard to have its whole wiring
harness replaced due to shoddy installation and cheap parts...

    			'nuff said...
