I'm considering a liveaboard someplace near Boston/vicinity. Are there any marinas catering for liveaboard around this area? I'd appreciate any names/location/phone of these marinas, as well as any liveaboard experience you have with them. Lastly any words of wisdom in their selection. Cheers, -Ashikin

There are several liveaboards around Lewis and Commercial wharves downtown. Pickering Wharf in Salem is a possibility, too, since it seems well protected from the weather and currents. Most places where the waters run cold and there's any real chance of ice forming and moving, floats are pulled to avoid damage from being frozen in and shifting due to strong winter winds, and operations shut down. Some places you might be able to tie up dockside rather than to a float, which solves one set of problems but poses its own. There are no year-round non-commercial tie-ups available around Cape Ann, for instance. J.

I considered leaving my boat in the water last year and was told that the only place that hasn't frozen over was Boston harbor. I got rates at two, Constitution Warf and one near the Airport, next to a ship yard. Both have live aboards.

In addition to the Constitution Marina, there's an extensive marina alongside the condos at the old Charlestown Navy Yard. Forgot the name but you'll see the boats docked there if you walk along the water. There are many year round liveaboards there. Based on the experiences of a friend who's been there a few years, on those cold nights in January, the marina bar does a lot with business with the liveaboards. - gene |
