1927.0. "a little dolphin fun" by OLDTMR::FRANCEY (M/L&CE SECG dtn 223-5427 pko3-1/d18) Tue Sep 15 1992 13:02
My wife, dog and I had a new experience on Sunday. We were with sails
down and had motored to a spot about 4 miles ne of Portland Harbor.
I've been fishing off the boat all summer and only caught one fish to
date and the time had come for me to get serious.
So, we were slowly drifting along in the calm and I had dropped a
fishing line over the side and was trying all kinds of lures. Then we
saw three dolphins that were frolicking about around 200 ft away. I
pulled up my line and put it away.
We watched the dolphins playing around, swimming in formation and
staying within a 100 ft radius of where we saw them. I began a long
slow rhthmic whistle like "whoooooo, whooooooo, whooooooooo" and the
dolphins immediately came toward the boat. They played with us by
swimming all around the boat, slowly and then dartind under the boat.
I kept the slow dronging whistle and they kept responding. Every so
often, one of them would come up to the surface along the side of the
boat and momentarily stop dead in its tracks with its head out of the
water looking up at us.
We were all fascinated and were once more reassured on things about the
creation and its beauty. What a way to end last week's vacation!
Regards,
Ron
