| The idea of match racing at the end sounded great - a sort of heats and
finals approach.
The UK did get a medal in the Soling, but that still wasn't enough to
have it shown on the TV - at least it never was while I was watching
except for 5 seconds in the review at the end of the Olympics when
we had a picture of each of the medal winners.
I would say not all classes are ideal for a match race finish... butfor
the Solings I like the idea - I hope someone has made a decent video
that we cah show at the local club....

| o If you are a regatta sailor
On occasion but not more than a couple of times a year. Keep talking
about changing it but have yet to find a boat that I really want to own
and race on a regular basis that also has any local activity.
o In what country do you live and in what area (state, province, town)
U.S.A. Nashua New Hampshire
o Did your country had representatives in yachting
Yes
o Did your country had a representative in the soling class
Yes
o Did the representatives won medals
Yes
o Did the Soling representative won a medal
Yes
o Was there TV coverage (state classes)
A brief couple minute wrap up one morning mostly featuring the
Prince of Spain rather than any U.S. sailors.
o Was there Live TV coverage (state classes)
Not that I know of and I looked to see.
o Wat was there other media coverage
In the boating magazines there was pre-olympic articles and I wrap
up one in the future. I do not get any news papers so do not know if
they covered anything.

| o If you are a regatta sailor
No
o country - city - yacht club
New Zealand - Auckland - Bucklands Beach
o Yes NZ had representatives in all classes.
o Yes see above
o NZ won 4 medals at the games 1 gold,2 silver,1 bronze
Womans Sailboard
Star (Rod Davies, Don Cowie of Americas Cup NZL20)
o The Soling Representative ( Russell Coutts Also off NZL20) finished 8th in
the prelims
o Live - the only problem was it started just after midnight and I have to
work, the classes I actually saw where 470 - mens and womans, Flying Dutchman,
Star. I'm sure the soling was featured but the classes where not advertised
in the future as TV here didn't know what they where getting in advance.
Certain if Russell Coutts had of qualified.
o Live - But we are strong in the yachting
o Lots of other media coverage but again it was the only gold won.
Cheers

P.S. does anyone out there know how to copy replies between windows in NOTES
so I can just answer the questions.

| >> does anyone out there know how to copy replies between windows in NOTES

I do if you're working on a terminal, not using DECwindows. Hit the DO
key at the top of your keyboard. Then type OTHER. This puts your
cursor in the window of the reply you are replying to. The method of
cutting and pasting your reply depends on the editor you're using, but
the keypad key REMOVE should work to cut out the part of the reply you
want. When you've finished cutting, hit the DO key and type OTHER
again. This puts you back in your reply window. Then hit INSERT HERE
to add the text you cut from the reply in the window above yours.
Hope this helps ...

| Having almost no replies proves my point that people are NOT interested to have
sailing as a passive media sport but as a sport they want to practice
themselves.

| Rudy,
I would love to see more sailing on television, the amount shown in
the UK is minimal. However during the summer it would probably be shown
at weekends when....most of us are out on the water , so it would have
to be taped. Now if only this winter someone would do a weekly series
that showed the Olympics, America's cup, Tall ships race, Brest
'92......

| Rudy,
I would have replied but found your questionnaire a bit daunting!
:^) I would love to see more class racing on TV. Close quarters racing
is exciting when your participating but I wonder whether this could be
captured in the same way as land base sports. I suppose in these days
of mini cameras they could be installed on a few boats and with a
roving cameraman on an inflatable it could grab the attention of the
non -participant public. A weekly magazine type program would probably
do for me. I'm in North East UK. Crew on a racing Oyster 41 and race my
own GP14. Hope this helps. _ John

| Ditto .7 Coverage in the UK was almost nil, I guess there is a limited
audience. Apart from a few seconds on the national news about the
Soling victory we got zip.
Re .3 I wouldn't mind taping a broadcast at 4am in the morning but we
don't even get that ;^(
The best UK coverage of other (non-Olympic) events was America
Cup, Admiral's Cup and the Ultra-Light 30's racing (whatever
that regatta was). These all "made it" because they all carried
water-proof(=submersible for Ultra's) video cameras aboard which
brings the action home much better, especially if boat passing
behind smacks the camera mount ;^). All the technology
for remote control of the cameras is there, just waiting to be
used.
This seems to be the clue to getting sailing on air. Make it
interesting/exciting/understandable and people (=non-sailing
fraternity) will watch. So the numbers and the ratings go up,
which is all the TV companies care about.

| During this olympics all six solings in the matchrace event where equiped with
onboard camara's, twelve other camara's where available on shore, in active
steered double cardanic remote controled devices on powerboat's and in two
helicopters.
All races where broadcasted live from spain. The countries only had to pickup
the signal. Obvious the did not.

| Here in the states, we had 100's of hours of free coverage. in
addition, for only $125, you could get an additional 3 channels that
would broadcast 12 hours of coverage each day.
With all that air time, there was NO sailing coverage, except for the
windsurfer piece. I was willing to shell out the $125 for some decent
sailing coverage, but when I saw the schedule, I couldn't see coughing
up the money for a bunch to events I wouldn't slow down driving to see
live. In Korea four years ago, at least there was some coverage of
sailing.
I guess if we are to change this for Atlanta, someone had better start
giving sailing lessons to a certain Chicago Bulls celeberity so Nike,
wants to fund a bunch of commericals for sailing shoes
"Yes, you can slap dunk your opponents tacks, and put the killer cover
on them with the NEW Michel Jordon BAD-Air Nikes! "
