    A language problem ......

What I think you call a dodger I call a sprayhood ie something that
goes over the companion way hatch and gives protect to the forward end
of the cockpit. What I call a dodger is material that is rigged to the
guard rails to give protection to the sides of the cockpit. What is the
    North American term for those.

What you're calling a sprayhood is mostly (I think) called a seahood here,
meaning a cover (usually fiberglass) over the front end of the sliding
companionway hatch. I've been meaning to build one for years.

The material rigged to the stern pulpit/lifelines to protect the cockpit
is mostly (I think) called weathercloths. We made some, but they so
restrict visibility to windward when heeled that we stopped using them.
Too risky for the benefit.

Down here the thing that goes over the hatch/campanionway is called
a spray-dodger and the bits that go around the sides of the cockpit on the
pushpit/lifelines are call leecloths.
We dont have either they are for cruisers.

Ah now Lee cloths are canvas sides we rig on berths so you can sleep on
passage without falling out! In the English Channel the bits around the
side of the cockpit are a real necessity, I gues it says something
    about our weather. !
