Is anyone out there with an autohelm auto pilot and a wooden
wheel.I ask because I am considering getting an ST4000 and
I was told that I may have to buy the wooden wheel kit D119, for
almost another $ 100,because the atachements it comes with are
for skiny metal wheel spikes and not the wooden spikes.
Is it true? Do I have to get it or is there any way around it?
Thanx.

I'd guess that you need the kit if you're not willing to drill holes in
your wooden wheel. Take a look at the belt wheel that comes with the
autopilot and check whether you can attach it readily to your wheel. It
should be easy. (But everything always turns out a litter harder when you
actually *attempt* it :-))

I have an Autohelm 1000 and would like to add the interface to talk
with my Loran via the 183 interface. The interface retails for $450
and I'm in no way interested in spending that amount of money. I've
noticed that the new Autohelm ST2000 (?) has an optional interface to a
Loran (or to "SeaTalk" devices) that sells for about $113. This amount
I would pay. So the question is will that interface work with the
older 1000?

I just called Autohelm; no deal on what I'm trying to do. Their older
interface retails for $350 which is too much for getting cross-track
features (and destination features).

I wonder if there are any "used" interfaces around.

1878.6help adding laptopOLDTMR::FRANCEYM/L&CE SECG dtn 223-5427 pko3-1/d18Tue Jul 07 1992 16:1825
Autohelm told me that the ST2000 has much more intelligence than the AH
1000 and that the ST2000 interface ($113) won't work with the AH 1000
(when coupled to my Sea Ranger 2000 Loran.

Let's take this as a challenge. Both units (AH 1000 and Loran) use the
183 interface. The Loran supplies input to the AH via "sentences".
What is the exact protocol of the 183 interface? Can I get a laptop,
buy a card that has the interface, write or get a driver, supply a user
program to handle the interface and get what I want?

The laptop should be battery powered with a recharge from my 12 volt
battery, somehow. The "card" might be something I could get from Radio
Shack.

Does anybody have any suggestions on where to get the 183
specifications? This project could be a fun job for me to do (and
debug) during a sail (under light winds!).

Are there any publications that go intoi great depth on the "sentences"
exchanged among the instruments using 183?

Regards,

Ron
