Note 1874.0 annual SAIL CLEANING No replies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is that time of the year when it is nice to have a gleaming
white set of sails. So I buy a few small boxes of "Sailnet" sail
cleaner, fill up the guest bathroom bath tub with hot water, disolve
the cleaning powder & soak my sails for 24hrs, rince them a few times
in another bathtub until the water is clean & hang them to dry from
hooks that I have placed in the ceiling in my garage.
The whole process takes the best part of a week for my 4 sails.
The result is 95% successful & my sails are dazzlingly white, but I
still have the odd patch which is not perfect, especially where the
sails have several thicknesses, such as around the reef hook ou points,
batten pockets etc....
Incidentally I clean all my ropes at the same time & they become
not only white but super soft & pliable, better than new.
Would some of you care to share your "trade secret" on how you
maintain your sails.
"Bon vent",
Nick

1874.1 | Oxalic Acid? | PCBUO1::MWEBER | Michael Weber | Wed Aug 03 1994 11:07 | 6 |
| Actually, I have a question rather than a solution. I've heard mention of using oxalic acid to clean rust stains
from dacron sails. I don't, however, want to end up with a big hole in it! To those that have done this
successfully -- Do you use Oxalic Acid full strength or dilute it? Do you neutralize it afterwards with something
like baking soda?
