1863.0. "job hunting advice" by UNIFIX::BERENS (Alan Berens) Mon May 04 1992 18:34

Given the present hard economic times and the risk that we may be job
hunting, I thought I'd post the following:

[stolen from WoodenBoat, May/June 1992]

Have you been shot down lately when applying for a job and wondered
why? Perhaps you told the interviewer you were interested in boats. Paul
Lipke, our man in charge of the psychology of monomania, reports that a
survey of 153 companies by the Director of Placement at Northwestern
University lists 50 negative factors that frequently lead to the
rejection of a job applicant. Right there on the list -- right up there
with "poor personal appearance," "limp, fishy handshake," "lack of
tact," and "low moral standards" -- is "boats during vacation."

Or find a company whose directors sail... My neighbour in the Marina at
Chichester used to be the Sales & Marketing Director of Servomex. All
the directors sailed and they used to hold board meetings antifouling
    each others boats! 8^)

If you WORK for those directors, that is! I took much grief when
a new supervisor came in, who was quite anti-sailing. This was in
a company with 3 sailing Wagners, alone!! (Myself, Bob, and the
fabled WAGS... see elsewhere in the conference!). There were 7 or
8 of us who raced, so Thursday morning hallway recaps were common.

All in all, this anti-sailor ended up with a big S&S designed aux.
    	cruiser, years later. Harrumph.

At another company, very small, several designers couldn't agree on
system timing, days blown arguing. I packed them on my 22' boat in
20+ knots, and after pooping everyone out, we came up with a
workable timing diagram- on the back of my chart!

    	Gee, wonder if I coulda written that off my taxes  8*}

Gee, I got a job in Washington once, largely because the personnel
director wanted to hear more about my experiences cruising the Coast of
Maine while living aboard a 12' sloop.
