1855.0. "Info for BEGINNER Instructions" by MILPND::GLIDDEN (ohhh baby!) Wed Apr 22 1992 15:37

Sorry for not searching first. Mods, please move to a more
appropriate note if necessary, and advise me of the move...thx.

I'm looking for information about where to go in Newport, RI
and along the CT coast to get beginner sailing instructions.
We're looking for training on a larger vessel with captain/
instructor for a crew of 4-6 novices. Cost is no object.
Can anyone provide any info at all? Also what should we read
    	up on in preparation? Thanks.

    	Nancy

For the last 3 summers I have been in a sailing club that offers
sailing classes, both for daysailers and for the larger boats. It is
located in Portsmouth R.I. (next town to Newport). The name is East
Passage Sailing School and Club. Call 401 683-5930. Ask for Matt
Berbig, and tell him I sent you.

If needed, I can give you more information. My number is 276 9167.
    Good Luck.

1855.3Sailing Courses in Central Massachusetts ?AHIKER::EARLYBob Early, Digital ServicesWed Jul 29 1992 13:2413
                       (* BASIC SAILING INSTRUCTION *)

Does anyone have any knowledge of Sailing Instruction or courses
    in Central Massachusetts ?

Like the Worcester - Fitchburg area ?

I assume much about sailing can be conducted on freshwater lakes
and waterways as on the bays and estuaries ?

all this money. (taught me to sail also....).

1855.6$ and hiking (as applied to sailing)UNIFIX::FRENCHBill French 381-1859Thu Jul 30 1992 09:4416
You don't need much money, Bob.

This is from one who presently owns 7 boats, most of them sail. The last
2 cost me $30 (Sailfish that I have put another hundred into and will
probably spend $200 more on) and $125 (windsurfer - beginner's
    "polywhale" complete)

Hiking is part of sailing - especially on a small light boat. Hiking
out is the act of hanging your upper body and sometimes fanny too, to
keep the boat from tipping over, or to keep it sailing flat for more
    speed.

    Welcome aboard.

    Bill

I would like to add my recommendations for this fine school.

In addition to being a division of Mass Dept of Environmental
Affairs, it is also affiliated with the Sailing Club on the Charles
River Basin (near the Hatch Shell and Mass Gen'l Hosp), and also
a sailing club on the Merrimack River in Lowell, MA.

A membership in one entitles the holder to use any of the three
facilities, after getting your Helmsman rating.
(HelsmanRating about equals 'enough knowledge to pilot the boat
without being a significant hazard to oneself, the boat, or the
clubs good name) ... I *assume* Helmsman, as used by the RPSC is a
local term, and not an 'Official' term approved by some higher power
in the Sailing Yachtsmans Association ??).

I can only compare this school to itself, being a list of one that
    I've tried. Their teaching method is simple and straightforward;
teaching first reaching, close hauled sailing, and finally jibing.

The Thursday night class teaches the three basic knots:
    Square, Bowline, and figure eight, and how to rig the boat;
and principles of each sailing maneuver in respect to the wind.

The Tuesday night class (which I have not yet taken) covers
safety and some other stuff. Getting the Helmsman rating also is
contingent on taking all classes and passing some tests to show
    proficiency.

The classes are small, with the Sailing Class (in the boat) being
virtually private lessons; and they give the student lots of hands-on
experience (practice). I soloed (sort of) last Saturday with my wife
and almost had the lake to ourselves (drifting along the ripples).

Its my first real involvement with Sailing, and my wife is returning
to it after a 30 year hiatus . and of course she loves it, having
once been very involved in it as a teenager, doing Regattas and other
stuff. Some of the terms are confusing to her, because she originally
learned Sailing when speaking Spanish through some Yacht club in
    Caracas.

Any chance someone might have a basic Sailing Primer (at least
most of the Sailboats terms in Spanish?) ?
    /Bob

Check out the notes conference MARVIN::SAILING_IN_EU. They had a
distionary of terms for various languages. I do not remember if
    Spanish was one.
