1848.0. "storm sails formulas" by JUPITR::KTISTAKIS (Mike K.) Wed Apr 01 1992 16:53
About a month ago I came up to a brand new 12 OZ.and 65 SF storm jib
at a very reasonable price.At that time I didn't know how to
calculate the footage needed for my boat and I had to act fast if
I wanted to have it. Anyway I got the jib and a couple of days later
I found the formulas in the USPS" Cruise planning" book from where
I copy without permission:
" STORM TRYSAIL not larger than 0.175 P x E in area.It shall be sheeted
independently of the boom and shall have neither a headbord nor battens
and be of suitable strength for the purpose.The yacht's sail number and
letter(s) shall be placed on both sides of the trysail in as large
a size as is practible.
STORM JIB of suitable strength for the purpose with area not greater
than 0.05 IG (5 percent of the height of the foretriangle squared),
the luff of which does not exceed 0.65 IG (65 percent of the height
of the foretriangle).
HEAVY WEATHER JIB of suitable strength for the purpose with area not
graeter than 0.135 IG (13.5 percent of the height of the foretriangle
squqred) and which does not contain reef point."
