1821.0. "used parts/equipment?" by SMAUG::MORENZ (JoAnne Morenz) Wed Jan 15 1992 11:11

My husband and I have just undertaken the reclamation of a Hurricane Bob
casualty, a 25' Hunter that we got for almost nothing. The hull and keel
are in great shape, the mast looks good too, but almost all other hardware
was stripped (or ripped) off of the boat before it made it to this yard.

There is some damage to the deck, near the bow, the life line posts were torn
out and snapped off. The owner's insurance company totalled it, as it is a 70's
vintage craft, and that is how we met up with it. We have had some estimates
done for the deck repair, but we still need all that hardware!

We would like to go the second hand parts route on anything that we can. Are
there such things as *junk yards* where one can salvage used boat parts?

	Thank you for any input!

Well, there is a place in R.I.that you may be lucky and find some parts.
First of all make a list of what you need and call, don't go unless they
possitively say they have it.The name of the place is Marine Placement
in Davesville R.I. and their number is (401)294-2360 .
If you go there you may feel crying as you will see 20-30 broken hulls
from Huricane Bob.I went there 3 weeks after Bob and all boats were
almost clean. However they had some parts for smaller boats and a lot
of engines for anyone interested, and I mean a lot of them.
I saw a guy taking a shaft of a boat, most of the ports were gone
and whole masts were already tagged "sold" But as I said call and
if they have what you need and you decide to go ask for good directions
because they are very hard to find and offer them half what they
asking for.I saw someone doing that and they accepted with no fuss.

I am just about to go to Florida for 2 weeks for a mid-winter break and
have heard from some friends here that there may be places in Florida
that specialize in used sailboat gear. I heard that there is a place
with walls lined with self-tailing winches (used) at a third of the
    original price (!).

Now that sort of sounds like "there is a place in South America where
the streets are paved with gold !" but what the heck. I would dearly
love to replace my jib sheet winches with self-tailing etc. I would
dearly love to get my hands on large amounts of stainless steel stuff
at 1/3 of the original (cheap US Vs. Canadian) prices. Do these places
    really exist ?

By the way we will be in the St. Pete's area and any suggestions as to
sailing-type tings to do would be appreciated.
