1813.0. "Catalina 22 - Swing Keel Pin" by CIMNET::LEBLANC () Mon Nov 18 1991 11:23

    I have a 1986 Catalina 22'with a swing keel. The keel pin has never
    been inspected and I suspect it needs doing. Has anyone done this job
    before at home and have advice on how to seperate the boat from keel?
    I know where the bolts are, but need to know the best procedure in
    supporting the boat and keel during the operation.
    Does a five year old boat need this inspection? (perhaps I'm making
    work for myself).

    I've helped another sailor service their C22 keel at home and I had
    mine done by my yacht club. My opinion is that if work is really
    needed, then using a crane or lift is the only way to go.

    In any case, if your keel has a lot of side to side play, then you may
    wish to check the pin, flanges and keel. If not, you are probably ok
    and the only thing you may wish to do is to check that the bolts
    holding the flanges in place can be removed. Generally this is done by
    removing and replacing the retaining bolts one at a time. I would
    probably also want to support the keel by blocking.

    I had an older C22 and I'm not sure the 1986 boat should have this
    problem, but I obtained a kit from Catalina that included a new pin,
    wider flanges, and keel trunk shims that epoxy to keel. I should note
    that my 6-year old original equipment pin was in perfect condition.

1813.2This method worked for meCSC32::L_BRODEURMon Dec 30 1991 11:3015
    I have removed the swing keel on a laguna 22 once. It was quite a job
    but I did it myself by using jacks and supports. I jacked boat and
    trailer up then used braces and supports to suspend the boat. I then
    removed the keel bolt and let the keel rest on the trailer. Then I
    lowered the trailer back down leaving the boat suspended on jacks. I
    was then able to roll the trailer with the keel on it out from under
    the boat. While I had the keel off, I removed the rust and repainted
    the keel. The keel bolt was in good condition and I didn't notice any
    wear or need for shims in the keel bolt hole.

    To reinstall the keel, I just reversed the procedure. It was a lengthy
    process but worked for me. I dont think I would want to do it again
    any time soon.
