1797.0. "What is NMEA 183?" by GVMIND::VASIC () Sun Sep 29 1991 12:11

In most high-quality electronic devices proposed for sailing boats,
it is mentioned "NMEA 183 interface". It is used to connect together
devices like loch, speedo, compass, LORAN, ...

Does anyone knows better what is this NMEA, how it works, how it could
be used to connect to a PC ?

NMEA(NAT'L MARINE ELECTRONICS ASSOC. I Think) 0183 is the third and most current
standard for passing info among electronic navigation devices. Along with
transmission speed (1200baud I think) and other things, it specifies "sentences"
which are use to transmit the information. These are ASCII character strings which
describe what type of info is beiong passed and what the value of that info is.

Yes, 0183 info from your LORAN or RAdar et al can be piped to a pc thru the serial
port.

I have the specs for 183 at home and will try to find them for you.
