1789.0. "Hobie 16 - locate leak in hull?" by MUCTEC::APPS (How long IS the string then?) Fri Sep 13 1991 03:05

Would anyone care to offer some advice on locating a smallish leak in
one of the hulls of my Hobie 16? The amount of water I drain out after an
aftenoon's sailing is not dramatic, but enough to warrant investigation and
repair (once I can find the leak...).
Inspection of the hull after sailing and prior to draining the water does
not reveal anything, i.e., I cannot locate water `leaking back out of the hull'
once it's on dry land.

Regards,
    John

What about the joints around the 4 posts that extend to support the
    trampoline ?

A good friend of mine reseals these joints every year with "Coltogum" a
waterproof sealant - he does his inspection ports at the same time.

1789.2fill 'er upMAST::SCHUMANNFri Sep 13 1991 13:068
If you deliberately fill the hull (through the drain hole) you should be
able to find the leak(s). If you elevate the drain hole end, you should be
able to fill virtually the entire hull. Be sure to support the hull adequately,
since it will be quite heavy when it's full. (Before you do this, think about
how to get the water back out, i.e. will you be able to tilt the boat back
the other way...)

.1 is probably where it is coming in from. It not, check the drain plug
housing is silconed, and the bottom of the hulls are not worn through.

Use silcone sealer. It's easier to find. The RTV stuff lasts 4-5 seasons.

to locate the hole mix us a bit of soapy water and splash it all
over theboat. Then get your wet dry vaccumn and direct the discharge
into the drain plug. Where ever your boat starts bubbling, thats your
leak. Be carefull to let a bit of air leak past the hose. Otherwise you
could split a hull seam (meant for compression, not expansion).

Ditto on .3. use the vac with bypass and bubbles. If you use RTV
under the hardware, don't tighten it down all the way till it sets up.

Gives you a good gasket surface then.
1789.5Even Monohulls can do it...AKO539::KALINOWSKIMon Mar 23 1992 12:207
    re .3

In this month's SAIL magazine, they talk about the same trick for
finding leaks on monohulls. Basically seal up the entrance with garbage
bags and duck tape, then use the blower on one of the vent holes.

Good place to get Hobie parts? Replacing some
rigging and traveler parts on my ancient 16. Also
need some tephlon discs for the mast-step. Who stocks
    what around Boston?

Also, I need to get new tires and rollers for my "Tee-nee" trailer.
    Same question.

Probably NEw HAmpshire Hobie, just over the line in Seabrook, NH is the
most convenient place. Depends on where you live. There are others.
I mail order a lot, too. I can look those places up at home if you
    want to go that route.

    Other places to check:

Wilderness Sports, Amherst NH. limited selection

Cape Watersports Harwichport Ma. They opened a second site in Quincy, but
I am not sure if it is still there. Where they rent over 70 16s, I
would image they would have your wires. Phone 508 432-7079

Goodhues in Leominster. Original New England dealer. limited selection,
bizzare store hours, call ahead. 508 537-0058 or 534-4319.

For mail order, I use john "Bill" Frye at KISME marine in Mill City Texas.
Bill can finagle anything for you. Nobody cuts list price, so he is
price competitive. Fast shipping. The lady who takes the order
sometimes has trouble, just ask for Bill then. Wonderful Customer Service
    Attitude. phone 512 659-4258 .

Another mail order house is Murray's Marine in Cal. 805 684 8393. They
make rigging, but I remember the prices to be the same as Hobie's or
    higher.

SSI was bought out by Hobie and products the Hobie Catalog.

when ordering anything on the phone (dealer or mail order), it is best
to have the part number. If you call Hobie HQ in Cupentino Cal, ask for
a Hobie catalog. Beside lots of neat stuff, the back of the book is
exploded diagrams of every boat they have made, with part numbers,
prices etc. You can't beat the price (free).

Heard Wilderness has dropped Hobie and will not be carrying parts.
What they have is limited and getting more so all the time. Friend is
dusting off his Hobie 18 and I sent him to Wilderness and he ended up
making a trek to New Hampshire Hobie. He was not super impressed with
New Hampshire Hobie compared to the place he used when he lived in
    Virgina.....
