    I agree with .2

This year for the 1st time italian national TV (RAI) is covering
a little bit of the event. I wonder if they're planning some co-
verage on the Fastnet. Maybe some of you would like to go on com-
puter coverage? If any, many thanks in advance.

        8th Aus. 29.00

I don't know what the scoring scheme is, but there is obviously not
much between the first 3, with Germany just about in touch. There is
one more inshore race on Thursday, followed by the Fastnet, which the
    points count 2.5 times.

One of the Japanese boats has lost its mast, and didn't race in race 4,
and the Australian boats are seriously off the pace.

Current top boat is Vibes, which won the one-ton race by miles
    yesterday.

The weather was misty, with more wind ( force 3-5 ) and choppy seas.

British TV coverage is limited to 5 mminutes per night, but there is
usually a half hour program after the event is over.

Sorry, I have lost the race 3 results.

Wings of Oracle has had 2 points deducted after a protest hearing found
that her spinnaker had hit the windward mark as it was being hoisted.

Aug., 13th, 17.25 local time: "Passage to Venice", skippered
by Grant Dalton has won the Fastnet Race well ahead on "Merit"
and "Rothmans". The wind was so light that she has spent about
one hour to pass the arrival mark.
Does someone have the Admiral's Cup classement? Last news were
based on forecasts and so I prefer to cross my fingers.

    Bye all.

The Admirals cuppers had not finished in time for this mornings (
wednesday ) papers. One of the Danish yachts reports all the AC boats
in sight, apart from Corum Saphir, the French 50ft which appears to
have got away from the fleet.

Basically, it seems to have been a very light wind lottery.

    Hopefully, results tommorrow.

1768.8France provisional winners.CHEST::BARKERHappiness is a BCCI overdraftThu Aug 15 1991 04:5880
Following a very light wind Fastnet, the French team pulled off a major
upset by winning the Admirals Cup, by a small margin from USA. The
Challenge from Italy and Great Britain faded as they finished 3rd and
4th. ( These results are provisional, but there are no known protests
    outstanding. )

The French team, which is sponsored entirely by the Swiss Watch maker
Corum, were not very highly fancied, mainly because of lack of practice,
and the feeling that their 2-tonner was not really up to scratch. Their
50footer has spent little time in the water following the incident in
a US 50ft regatta in which the front 3 feet of her bow were removed in
a windward mark fracas ( she was called Capricorno at that regatta ).
However, the French weather information seemed to be better than the
others, and at one point, Corum Saphir was 7 hours ahead of her rivals.
This was reduced when they sailed into a big hole just short of the
finish, but they managed to stay ahead. At the end, the overall result
depended on the final position of the US one-tonner Vibes, if she
finished 3rd in her class, that would have given the cup to the USA,
but unfortunately she could only manage 5th.

    Results.

Outside the Admirals cup, the Italian Yacht Passage to Venice (
formally Windward Passage II ) won the Maxi race, with round-the-world
race boat Merit 2nd ( now with a ketch rig ) and Rothmans ( in her last
race before being put up for sale ) 3rd.

1768.9Corrected Team results in full.CHEST::BARKERHappiness is a BCCI overdraftFri Aug 16 1991 04:3534
Apologies everybody, I made a mistake in the overall positions in
my note yesterday, so here they are full.

    1st France 138.75 points
    2nd Italy 138.13
    3rd USA 134.00
    4th GB 113.88
    5th Germany 99.50
    6th Denmark 99.00
    7th Japan 66.75
    8th Australia 57.00

The points were 1 per position plus a little bit ( .25 ? ) for coming
first, with the channel race points multiplied by 1.5, and the Fastnet
by 2.5, therefore the top 3 were very close.

This is the first time France has won the cup. They have had good boats
in the past, but have not been able to put in a good team performance,
including one memorable year when one of their crews mutinied before
the Fastnet. This year, they performed as a single unit, with matching
paint jobs and uniforms, sailing around as if tied together by rope.

There is considerable debate about the future of the cup, particularly
with the decline of IOR, but there will be one in two years time,
format to be decided. Meanwhile, in the even numbered years, they
will be running a new event, called the Commodores Cup, for teams of
3 IMS boats, exact format to be decided, there will be an offshore
bias, but no very long Fastnet-like race. Unfortunately, the Royal
Ocean Racing Club ( who run these events ) are rather more committed to
IMS than the British racing boat owners.

ITV showed a half hour program about the Fastnet and the Admirals Cup
    on Saturday.

It showed lots of film of stationary yachts on a glass-smooth ocean,
    going nowhere fast.

The French navigator of Corum Saphir ( 50ft ), claimed that he was
no genuis, but that the flyer that the whole team took was obvious
from the weather fax, but UK,USA and Italy were too busy covering each
other. They all went north of the rhumb line from Lands End to the
Fastnet, and ended up reaching up to the rock in new wind, while the
rest beat into fickle headwinds. Saphir was reputed to be 45 miles
ahead at one point, but this was slowly eroded to a final lead of only
1 mile ( from Will ) at the end.

The Film also seemed to show the French 1 tonner ( Corum Diamant )
finishing in front of all the 2 tonners. I will check the results
to make sure this wasn't just a poor piece of editing.

The British yachts were seriously disappointed with their performance,
and the whole crew of Juno crossed the finishing line below decks with
only a dummy hanging from the rigging, and the helm lashed. Both Mike
McIntyre, skipper of Juno, and Andrew Hurst ( skipper of Port
Pendennis for the Fastnet, while Lawrie Smith steered Rothmans ) said
they really wanted to go the same way as the French, but team
instructions said to cover the Italians. Two years ago however, similar
tactics ( covering the Danes this time ) lead to doing badly in the
Race, but winning the cup overall. It is a very fine line to tread, and
the French showed the advantage of being behind.

    Roll on 1993,
