1722.0. "barber-haulers for jib sheets" by TARKIN::MCALLEN () Tue May 21 1991 13:59

    I'm interested to hear people's experience with
    barber-haulers (for jib sheets). I recently acquired
    a boat which uses barber-haulers, in addition to
    the familiar track and slide arrangement for the
    two jib sheet fairleaders (?) and jam-blocks.

    How common are barber-haulers? Are they all very
    similar in design? On each side of my (main) boom,
    30% out from the gooseneck, an adjustable line
    extends to the more stationary of the (two) jib sheet
    sections, such that it exerts an inward pull on the
    jibsheet, depending on the boom position.

    I assume the reason my boat has a barber-hauler
    is because the foot of the jib is too high to allow
    good control of jib shape by mean of the usual
    forward-mounted fairleaders. Using the barber-hauler,
    trimming the mainsail can cause significant changes
    in jib trim and well as jib shape. Supposedly the
    changing of jib shape as the mainsail is trimmed is
    desirable. However, it seems entirely possible to
    accidentally overstress the jib sheet, if not careful,
    when trimming in the mainsail (8:1 ratio) while
    close-hauled. Perhaps this indicates I've set the
    barber-hauler in too far?

    Any comments, advice, history or gripes about
    barber-haulers are welcome.

1722.1Barber haulers on catamaransACTHUB::RYANWed May 22 1991 17:0914
    You didn't say what kind of boat you have but I've had barber haulers
    on two of my catamarans. In my limited experience, barber haulers are
    used in lieu of jib tracks, probably because the boat can't accommodate
    the track (or the track would be set at the wrong angle) or because of
    cost (barber haulers are cheaper).

    Either way, since the jib blocks are usually set to windward, you use
    the barber haulers to pull the jib sheets up and outward for reaches
    and down wind runs. You should leave the barber haulers alone when
    close hauled. Barber haulers are simple, low-tech solutions to doing
    what a track would be used for. They certainly change the shape of the
    jib as you would expect.

1722.2bring the jib in....AKO539::KALINOWSKIWed May 22 1991 19:209
    barber haulers on most catamarans are used to pull the jib leads
    inward. On many Cats, the jib track is screwed into the hull, which
    may be too far outward for proper air flow. Using the barber hauler
    helps bring the jib into the proper position. This is from the new
    Hobie catalog I got friday (ya learn something new every day! )

    I have used what I thought to be Barber Haulers on my cutter for some
    time. I do not use them frequently because of the hassle in tacking,
    however on a long tack to windward (cruising) I belive that because of
    my boat's wide cain top (inability to a really tight sheeting angle on
    the jib the barber haulers lift me 5 degrees or so. I would rig
    something when going on holiday etc.

    I also don't know about which boat you have, but I have used them on a
    Catalina 27. We used them to fly a big Genoa and to effectively sheet
    the sail more inboard. This enabled us to point higher, especially in
    light to medium air on smooth water. The barber haul was a much
    cheaper, although less satisfactory substitute for another set of jib
    tracks. In some cases, with a particular sail, your boat may not have
    a good place to put a track, in which case barber hauling gives some
    improvement. I want to stress though, that it was less effective than
    having inboard tracks in the right place.
1722.5just a no-good trampTARKIN::MCALLENMon Jun 03 1991 18:587
    My boat is a 20' catamaran, and a constraint on jib
    track placement appears to be the reason the barber-
    hauler is needed. Additional tracks for the jib-blocks
    have already been installed, with little benefit.

    Can anyone explain the origin of the term "barber-hauler" ?

I too have a Catalina 27 and have been interested in the use of Barber haulers. I'd be interested in hearing how
you rigged yours -- location of fittings, etc.

1722.7Use the windward sheetMUZICK::THOMPSONMike LMO2-1/M13Wed Aug 03 1994 12:5411
	The jib-sheet tracks on the Cape Dory 25 are OK for a genoa
	but for a working jib, the sail is not inboard enough.

	After tightening the leeward sheet as desired, I return to
	the windward sheet and tighten that also. This sheet is then
	tight against the mast and pulls the jib inboard.

	This works a bit like a Barber hauler.
