1674.0. "Doing our share..." by ROYALT::FGZ (Federico Genoese-Zerbi) Tue Mar 05 1991 12:32

Greetings sailors,

As folks who spend a lot of time on the water, or try to anyway, we are
doubtless more aware than other groups of the kind of environmental destruction
that goes on in our waters, be they lakes, streams or oceans.

If this trend bothers you, this is YOUR chance to do something about it.

The New England Aquarium Diving Club, has formed a new organization, called
the Divers' Environmental Survey (DES) whose charter it is to use its members
to help protect the environment. How you ask? By:
	1. Surveying and documenting current conditions of aquatic ecosystems.
	2. Working, in conjunction with governmental agencies, on protective
	measures and clean-up measures.
	3. Actively seeking protection of endangered areas.
	4. Providing data for environmental groups to support protective
	initiatives.

So far DES has had tremendous success in sponsoring a few ghost gear clean-ups,
and in securing enthusiastic support from government agencies. But their
work has only begun.

This is where you come in. DES members are predominantly only divers. They
often need to get to places where a boat is necessary.........

So, if you own a boat, and would not mind being called 1/year, 1/month, 1/week,
whatever, to take some divers out to a particular dive site (day trip or
overnight, near or far, we'll take anything we can get), get in touch with me.
Let me know what kind of boat you have, what you'd be willing to do, etc.

My mail address is vsg9::fgz.

Alternatively, you can contact John Hics-Courant, at gemvax::hickscourant
if you have a boat in fresh water, or Joe Gobbini at aimt::gobbini if
you have a boat in the sea.

Every bit of help is greatly appreciated. I hope so many sailors will
volunteer that we'll never have to go without a boat.........

Hello,

DES has a dive scheduled this coming saturday (10/25/91) in Boston Harbor.
Problem is that none of our prospective sources of boats has come through
for us.

Would anybody be willing to take 4-6 divers and their gear out on saturday
morning, to 2 different sites in Boston Harbor (near Georges Island and
on Nantasket Roads)? We're more than willing to chip in, with fuel
reimbursment, and some other reimbursment if appropriate.

Please help! The DES Boston Harbor watch is in dire need of boating
help....
