1657.0. "Question on the 1991 Boat Shows" by MYKEY1::DANDURAND () Wed Jan 23 1991 17:41

I'm looking for some information on Boat Shows coming up in Boston. I did some
sailing on 13 ft boats when I was kid and had my interest rekindled after
crewing on my boss' S2 one evening a week in the Quincy Bay races during the
last two summers. Unfortunately, my boss move to Atlanta and took the boat with
him.

Anyhow, I really enjoyed the sailing, and I'm contemplating getting involved
again either through a club, renting, or possibly even buying one of my own
sometime down the road. At this point, I've got a lot of learning to do around
what to look for, what is important, and how the design characteristics impact
performance, safety, and stabilty. Not to mention, I've got a wife and two
daughters that need to be convinced that this is really a great idea!

So based on the above info, which of the Boat Shows would best provide some of
of the information I'm looking for and provide a pleasent experience for wife?
I know there is one starting the end of this week at the Trade Ctr, and someone
mentioned that there is a show specifically for sailboats in February at the
Bay Side Exhibition Ctr. Which of these would provide the most info on sailing
and boats in the 22 to 27 ft. size?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

    I'm a boat show junkie and do them all however, it was rumored
    by a dealer I spoke to today that the all sail show is cancelled,
    the show starting this weekend will be mostly power, (not by choice
    but because of who chose to participate and who didn't), and the
    Bayside Show will have the best participation of sail dealers.

    Take a chance and go to them both !

    Happy sailing,

    this weekend's show.

1657.3My Impressions of World Trade Center ShowLANDO::STONEMon Jan 28 1991 08:0726
    I thought that I would post a quick trip report. Cabin fever was
    peaking, so we went to the Boston World Trade Center yesterday (Sun.).

    Being that it was Superbowl Sunday, I had expected a small turnout. I
    was mistaken. Although not packed, by anyone's imagination, there was
    a healthy turnout. By 2:00, there were waiting lines for the larger
    boats. As in the past few years, this show illustrated the depression
    of the sailboat market. There were very few dealers there.
    Interestingly enough, Wells Yachts was there with both power and used
    sailboat listings (I guess the news of their demise was premature.)
    The new sailboats shown were the Island Packet 34, Catalina 30, 34, 22
    and, of course, McGregor and Hobie. To the best of my knowledge, only
    Thurston Sails represented any sailmakers. As with last year, not
    many quality booths (although I didn't see many Ginsu knife displays).
    Some big power yachts though (now I know what our troops in the gulf
    are fighting for ;^) ). Contrary to past years, we weren't asked to
    remove our shoes before boarding many of these boats. My wife was
    amused in watching a number of women in high heels negotiate entrances
    onto various craft.
    The America's Cup was exhibited by Bose. Nice set up in an off the
    main floor room. It was amusing to see the security guards racked with
    boredom standing a watchful guard. I didn't know that each race (with
    mileage) of each campain of the finals won by the victorious boat was
    etched in the cup.
    Given the past shows we have attended here, our expectations weren't
    set particularly high. Given this, I'd rate this show a C+.

    	re the Demise of Wells: The Hingham office is dead, burned, buried
    and replaced with Eastern Yacht Sales, owned by, I think, a Florida
    chain. Great tale of the owner scooping large quantities of bucks and
    splitting for tropical islands unknown.

    	Wells Marblehead is still being run by Cliff (?) Wells, rep'ing
    lotsa different yachts.

    This was Wells of Marblehead. I had heard that they were on their way
    out, as well.

Eastern Yacht Sales is owned by Jon Rotenberg of Boston and Rockport. His
family is into quite a few things in the GBA; his sister Judy, for
instance, is an artist who runs Rotenberg Gallery on Newbury Street. He
does (did?) have a West Palm Beach office, but I doubt he "split with the
cash", given his family's presence and reputation around Boston. Also,
FYI, he briefly owned Freedom Yachts, having bought it from Garry Hoyt (I
think) and then sold it quite soon after to T-P.

That's Clint Wells.

1657.7Not Jon R.BOMBE::ALLAMon Feb 11 1991 10:3312
    The folding of Wells Yachts Hingham branch was due to the former
    owner/manager bugging out. (not Jon R)

    In fact the the bank that bankrolled him (like floor planing costs)
    neglected to check inventory. He was selling the same boat
    more than once. (easy to do when you put your money down in feb
    for delivery in May )

    Just another piece of lore from the "go-go 80's" which leaves us
    with financial wreckage though the 90's.

1657.10Feedback on ShowRHODES::RONDINAMon Feb 18 1991 10:3616
    I went to the New England Boat Show at the Bayside Expo Center last
    Saturday.  Here's my review.

    Power, Power, Power, Power, Sail, Power, Equipment, and more power.

    The sailboats there included, Catalina 22, 26, 28 and 34, Freedom 38,
    Island Packet 32, Beneteau 30 (?), Mac Gregor 26, Caliber 38 and
    a Hunter 30 (?). Then some smaller daysailors.

    All in all I would say that it's worth the $5 parking and $5 entry
    fee. For a cold February Saturday, it felt good to "get my fix
    of fiberglass" to see me through until Spring.

    For local sailboat shows, there is only one - the Newport Sailboat
    Show. I went last August. Fabulous!!! I spent the whole day and
    still I could have used more time.
1657.11Fewer big powerboats, tooSELECT::COUTUREAbandon shoreMon Feb 18 1991 11:208
    I went to the show as well over the weekend. The only other sailboat
    there was a large (38ft?) Sabre. I only saw one sailmaker . . . Hood.
    Even the powerboat domain was a little skewed from previous shows.
    Lots of runabouts, but only a smattering of large cruisers and
    sportsfishermen (every cloud, eh?). Lots of people at the show, but I
    don't know how many were buying.
