1638.0. "Sleuth-work needed ..." by OFFPLS::RYAN () Tue Dec 04 1990 16:50

    I'm interesting in finding out more about a boat that I saw several times
    last summer at Lake Winnepeasake; unfortunately I only have a few clues
    that aren't all that informative:

    The boat is about 21-23' and looks like a J-24 with a raked transom, no
    identifying mainsail, and the word "FUN" gel-coated into the hull.
    This boat is trailerable (barely), has a keel/centerboard and a fixed spade
    rudder. I'm guessing "FUN" is some kind of model - but I'm not sure
    what model and what manufacturer.

    Can anyone help or point me to any publications?

1638.1Could it have been a SUNWAY 21STAR::KENNEYWed Dec 05 1990 11:185
    Could it have been SUNWAY the boat fits your general description except
    for the name. The builder is Jeanneau a french company with a braod
    line of boats.

    I looked in the BUC manufacturer/trade name index, and there
    are three "FUN" entries. The one which matches your physical
    description is:

    	23' 4"  GRP sloop 8' beam  2' 4" draft 1875 disp

    Ranger Yachts

    In my collection at home is a pamphlet on the 23' FUN collected
    in the 85-88 time frame. I believe it's the one listed in note
    .2. Let me know if you'd like a copy.

1638.4Yes the "FUN" exists... in France!SUTRA::JAHANPierre angulaire vs Black moonMon Dec 17 1990 06:2419
    The "FUN" is a French One design wich was built by Jeanneau (no, it's
    not the SUNWAY 21) in the early eighties, moulds have been sold since
    to a little yacht builder in Arcachon (South West) wich always produces
    it. Designed by Joubert-Nivelt, he was in competition with the First
    Class (Beneteau) to be THE little One design in France. The First Class
    finally got it (in Europe too) and that's why Jeanneau stopped to build
    it. By the way it is a very pleasant (yes "fun"!) boat, very light and
    able to overspeed (sp?) very easily, just like a dinghy. Cockpit is
    wide, and he is really easily trailerable with his folding keel (the
    Beneteau concept) and the rudder in a keelbox.
    His length is about 24 or 25 fts but I have to check.

    If you wish more technical info, or addresses, tell me and I'll try to
    find more.

    Cheers,

1638.5Request for info on another French boatLEVERS::HUGHESTANSTAAFLTue Dec 18 1990 20:318
    Pierre,

    While you are here, have you ever heard of a dinghy called the Zef,
    produced by Isle de Prairie during the '70s? I've got one and would
    like to get more information on rigging it.

1638.6Close to the "420"?SUTRA::JAHANPierre angulaire vs Black moonThu Dec 20 1990 12:114
    Mmmh, a quite old dinghy! I remember it was a "quiet" one, maybe close
    to the "420" dimensions, so try a look on this type of rig...

    I would strongly suspect the boat you saw was the Ranger 23, later
    labled with a bright graphic stripe and the word FUN on the hull.
    There are a couple raced here on our lake under PHRF if your interested
    in talking with an owner I could arrange. I believe a "similar" boat,
    the Sonar, also raced here, offers better perforance, simplier rigging
    and a better (larger) cockpit and cuddy-cabin.
1638.9Sonar is a fine boatAIADM::SPENCERCommuter from the other CapeTue Jan 29 1991 12:2412
>>> I believe a "similar" boat, the Sonar, also raced here, offers better

>>>  cuddy-cabin.

Used Sonars are common enough to constitute a fairly rational market, and
can be found in good condition for the $8-10K I think you mentioned in an
earlier note. While trailerable (road width, weight, etc), they have a
fixed fin keel drawing somewhat less than 4', I recall.

Very nice high performance boat, yet quite easy to sail and predictable.
