1636.0. "Clipper ship records" by AIADM::SPENCER (Commuter from the other Cape) Mon Dec 03 1990 13:07
Sometime near the end of October, a couple guys took off from San
Francisco in the trimaran "Great American", aiming to set a new eastbound
SF-Boston record passage. (They got the record going westbound NY-SF
record a year or so ago weeks after Warren Luhrs did it in his monohull,
though perhaps some Frenchman one-upped them all soon after; it's
difficult to keep track these days!)
Anyway, the expectation was that they'd make it non-stop in about 11
weeks, which would mean arrival sometime around mid-January, if my facts
and arithmetic are OK. It's of interest in part because they intend to
invite visitors aboard after arrival here, before heading south. It would
be worth the trouble of going downtown, I think.
Anyone have any more news or information about this?

| Don't hold your breath, their boat capsized off Cape Horn. The crew
was picked up by a passing freighter or other commercial vessel. I
guess the old record stands.
