1626.0. "Gulf Coast cruising guides" by STKAI1::ARAKANGAS () Fri Nov 16 1990 05:39

    Hi there,

We plan to visit USA with our 32 ft sloop Emma in 1992. We haven't
decided yet where to go except that we'll visit a friend in
Los Angeles. We'll probably cruise along the Gulf coast and finally go
through the Panama canal and up to LA.

Can anyone recommend any cruising guides or books about this part of
USA and the Caribbean? I do have the Street's guides of the Carribbean,
but they don't cover the continental US.

Any hints on nice places to go along the coast would be appreciated.

   Regards,

    Christer

    Christer,

I do not have information on Gulf Coast Cruising guides, but do have a
suggestion for the Texas Gulf. It is called the Texas Cruising Guide
and is an EXCELLENT book for all who wish to explore either the
offshore or intercoastal areas of Texas. It is a spiral bound volume
with 193 pages of information and 43 black and white reproductions of
various govt charts that fold out to approx 30" by 11". I suggest you
still get the BBA chart guide for the area. The color is very handy and
deliniates the chart features much better, but are no less accurate for
the areas covered in the book.

You can order the book by writing or Calling:

Mine cost $21.95, I believe the price is still the same.

(PS. Thanks to whoever write enabled this note so I could reply).

Off the subject but...

One of my buddies and big sailing nut has just accepted an offer to go work
for TI. Does anybody know of places that rent sailboats in the Huston area
for weekend/day sails (stuff like the Boston Harbor Sailing Club)?

There are a number of places which rent boats in Houston. Their is a
boaters yellow pages printed that has several listed in the area as
well as numerous ads in all the local boating rags. He will have *NO*
    problem finding them!
1626.4Don't miss the islands off and north of LANAS007::WINTERSThu Dec 06 1990 13:4915
Should you get as far as LA, you should visit Catalina Island and the
islands to the north off Santa Barbara.

A recent issue of Sail or Cruising World had an article on sailing this
area in a years time. The gist of the article was that one could time
the trip to get fair winds and no hurricanes (statistically speaking of
    course.)

Of course you could always time it to watch the America's Cup races in
    San Diego.

    Best of luck,
