| There is a volvo engine service place just down the road from you
at what was once CITY BOAT. There execelent and I have had them
work on my volvo gas when I had a power boat. They also work on
diesels.

1522.2 | Much Less Expensive: Unit to Dealer | WJOUSM::SCHLEGEL | | Mon Jun 04 1990 09:51 | 13 |
| Before you bring the mechanic to the boat, you might try to bring the
transmission to the mechanics. I did this with a rear seal problem
on my atomic four a year or two ago. It mostly depends upon how
difficult it is to get the transmission out of those cramped quarters.
I found that by removing the oil from the transmission, removing the
mounting bolts and sliding the unit back off the spline, it was easy to
bring the unit to them. Ultimately, that is just what their mechanic
will have to do. Good luck in your efforts. Perhaps, before starting
on this chore, talk to CITY BOAT or whoever is familiar with your
transmission and ask if there are any tricks to removing your specific
unit. One tip that might save a lot of clean-up: the clearance was
tight, so I slipped heavy duty foil under the unit and avoided any oil
spill. There usually is not room for any kind of a pan.

1522.3 | Try the guy at the Boatworks | CADSE::VENNE | | Mon Jun 04 1990 13:59 | 8 |
| (Old name--City Boatworks). There's a new engine mechanic there now. I don't
know his rep. or anything, but he seems like a good young guy, works long hours,
etc.
The Boatworks yard and marina are right on Merrimack Street, near Kathy Ann's
and 3R Marina.

1522.4 | some progress | MEMIT::VACON | | Wed Jun 06 1990 18:46 | 9 |
| Well, they finally did it, at Yankee Marine. I did not get to
talk with the mechanic, but will tomorrow, and will report
details on how it went.
And I will look up the guy at City Boat Works.
Hope they did it right.

1522.5 | repair complete, sea trial next | MEMIT::VACON | | Thu Jun 07 1990 10:12 | 32 |
| I spoke with the mechanic this AM.
It involved 2 seals. Both were replaced and the shaft alignment
was adjusted.
The job was ~$300.
As an aside, it may be of interest to boat buyers that read this file
how I've been treated by Sailboats NE, the dealer that sold the boat.
They offer a 60 day warranty on used boats on mechanical, hull, and
rigging. So far, this has cost them ~$1300. They have dealt with
this professionally and painlessly, never gave me a hard time.
All of the problems stemmed from a misalignment/cutlass bearing/stuffing
box problem that was not properly attended too by the previous owner.
Correction involved a new shaft, cutlass bearing, stuffing box, and
finally an oil seal. I should say, I hope thats all.
The formal sea trial with the surveyer will be saturday, now that
apparently all is corrected.
Again, I guess when you read a warranty you should expect the vendor
to stand by it, but I've learned to expect a lot less given bad
experiences with the quality of service on many products. Not true
in this case.
I'll let you know if how the sea trial goes.
Thanx for the advice on mechanics.
