| My suggestion would be to charter from either Cape Cod or Narragansett
Bay in Rhode Island and travel locally to the Elizabeth Islands,
Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Block Island. Sail Charters are
not generally available from the immediate Boston area, nor in my
opinion is New York a worthy destination. Ed Sargent of Sargent
Yacht Sales does a good charter business. There are many others
but I happen to have Ed's phone number here at the office. It
is (508)-564-6361. The sailing season is short here and the bookings
are being done now so I wouldn't delay.
Cruising World magazine is available in the UK I believe. They
include numerous charter listings.
You will have a wonderful time. Do it.

| Supporting what was said by Rick in .1, I can suggest Adventurer Yacht
Services, Portsmouth, RI (in Narragansett Bay). They charter boats
starting at 30' up to 38'. Prices start at $840 for a 3 day charter on
a Pearson 30' up to $2100 for 7 days on a Saber 38'. Telephone number
is (401) 683 3852. Address is 1 Maritime Drive, Portsmouth, Rhode
Island 02871. Speak to Bing Murray.

| I too recommend NOT sailing to NYC unless you have a specific reason to
end there. The best sailing would indeed be "Southern New England",
including Newport, Block I, Cuttyhunk I, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket,
Woods Hole, Marion. You will find much cleaner water, more interseting
harbors, better things to do ashore, and in mid-July, better wind than
in Long Island sound, especially in the southwest end. The only possible
drawback to New England is you will probably experience some fog, but
it shouldn't be a problem.
For years we sailed from NJ to New England for vacations. Most always
sailing "outside" non-stop to Block Island to avoid Long Island Sound.
Now, being "stuck" in St. Louis, we try to charter annually in New
England. I use Sailing and Cruising World magazines to locate boats.
Oddly, there seem to be different boats/prices/brokers each year, so
its best to shop.
For access from Boston I suggest you look at boats available on
Narraganset Bay (Newport, Jamestown, ideal), Marion, or anywhere on the
"mainland". Try to avoid Cape Cod if you plan to start/end on the
weekend, the traffic is SLOW. I like Newport since it is an easy place
to provision and to dump a rental car.
In regard to qualifications, I just send people a list of previous
charters and sailing experience. In 15+ years it has NEVER been
questioned. Somewhat scary how little anyone checks us out. On some
charters I've just been given a key and had the boat pointed out in the
harbor! If you have sailed much at all I wouldn't anticiapate any
problems.
Feel free to call if you have any questions. DTN 445-6492.
