1467.0. "Teak??" by HAVOC::GREEN (STEEL STRINGS) Mon Mar 26 1990 13:04

I have looked for the key words "teak" and "wood", but these themes
    haven't come up yet.

I am looking for a source for Teak in small sections for use as
replacement for a damaged rub rail and toe rail. After calling
several places in Maynard, there doesn't seem to be a local source.

Any suggestions for Teak? Acton, Concord, Maynard, Burlington, Waltham
     areas?

    Thanks..

Last summer I installed 'removable' toe rails with some very long
pieces of 1 3/4 x 1 3/8 teak that I got at Boulter Plywood in
Cambridge. Although their name implies plywood, they have a basement
full of teak boards in various sizes. They also have a scrap pile of
odds and ins. It's worth paying them a visit.

I will second the reference to Boulter Plywood. They don't sell just ordinary
plywood, they sell specialty plywood and lumber including furniture grade
plywood using various veneers, marine grade plywood, and other specialty woods
including sitka spruce. My DN supplier listing has them at 24 Broadway,
Somerville, MA. From past experience, they will do custom cutting and mailing.
You can also request a catalog.

This may be overkill for your needs, but I ordered a replacement teak
rubrail from Cape Dory for my CD22. It was cut to size, predrilled for
the screws, with a caulking groove---just remove the old one, cleanup,
caulk and screw down the new one. Saved having to splice in sections
where there was damage. (Other manufacturers probably could do the same
for the teak trim on their boats.)

	Try the keyword "suppliers".

There is a place (the name escapes me) in Rowley on route 1 that
carries exotics. I think the name is Yankee Pine & Lumber. They
have a teak supply that could make a grown [woodworking] man cry.
Also in their inventory are woods like black walnut, cherry, rock maple,
etc.... some is rough sawn, some finished.

They also handle (by ordering) marine plywoods. I find this place much
easier to deal with than Boulter because it has parking, takes plastic,
and is easier to get to for me. Your mileage may vary.

There is also CONDON LUMBER, in Long Island, I think, who advertises in
Sail and Cruising World magazines, all types of marine lumber, including
teak. Depending on the size, it may be reasonable to order by mail.

Condon is in White Plains N.Y. and have a good selection of exotic
    hardwoods.

..... and the winner was ....

    	Jeffers Lumber Yard
    	Lowell St.
    	Salem, Mass.

Price was competitive, but the service was exceptional. No problem
with cutting a piece to order (to fit) on a Saturday morning. Other
locations were not all that interested in the retail business.

Selection of teak, holly, oak and whatnot; staff of three folks working
planers, millers and table saws with an expert and expeditious touch.

    Strong recommendation.
