1454.0. "Anyone for the Figawi??" by BOSTP2::BEAU () Fri Mar 09 1990 10:15
Does anyone have an interest in entering the Figawi this year,
possibly as a fleet from the DEC sailing club? It might
be fun to get 5-10 boats together...not only would we be able
to provide a measure of safety, but we could have our own class,
raft up together in Nantucket, etc.
I believe the race is mid- to late-June, goes from Hyannis to Nantucket,
is basically a cruising race, and a heck of a lot of fun. Whereas
officially you pay an arm and a leg to moor in Nantucket harbor, I'm
told there are anchor spots at the other end of the Island, down at
Madaket, which are free, if you are shallow enough draft to get in, and
you cooperate with the tides.
The race is a serious party on the island, once you find your way there
(name of the race says it all.....).
If there is interest, I'll work as the fleet moderator, or whatever.

1454.1 | A lot of bucks for something that s---s | AKOV12::DJOHNSTON | | Fri Mar 09 1990 12:02 | 25 |
| Got my Figawi application last night. The race is Saturday, May 26.
That's Memorial Day weekend. There are no classes. It is a pursuit
race where everybody has a start time and the first over the line wins.
The handicaps are taken at the start, not at the finish.
In addition to my dour attitude towards this "race" the entry fee is
$200 per boat (includes three bracelets) and $50 per crew member or
guest in addition to that. The bracelets are for entry into the tent
and all Figawi related activities. They are NOT sold on the island and
HAVE to be purchased in advance. The Lobster bake is extra. Now one
can certainly consume enough of the free booze in three days to make up
for the $50 expense. Especially if the weather is typical of late May
on Nantucket. I've been there when it is in the 50's and blowing the
whole time.
If you do the race with a crew of six and each of them brings a
wife/husband/friend, the total cost just to enter is $650. Add to this
the mooring fee of I believe $3 per foot per day tne for a 35 footer
you've just added another $210 assuming you leave on Monday. Need a
place to stay? Sure, no problem. We rented a dump for $400 for the
weekend. Now you're up over $1200 and you haven't eaten a thing.
If you get nice weather, okay. If not, it sucks.

1454.2 | An Alternative | LANDO::STONE | | Fri Mar 16 1990 13:05 | 4 |
| I have to agree with Dave. It's a rip-off. Now if you want to do
something during Block Island Race Week, now that's interesting.

1454.3 | I could give it a try!!?? | TOLKIN::DEMOSS | | Tue Apr 03 1990 16:41 | 10 |

I would love to be on board a CRUSING race. If one is available and
its for fun. I have never raced before, other than maybe tightning up
on a sheet or two when trying to be passed by another similar size
8^)..... If someone is in need of a crew??....

| Greg - Try the Hyannis Yacht Club. I think they have something to do with this
race. Good Luck.
