1402.0. "Testing a loran coupler?" by SPCTRM::HARRIGAN () Wed Nov 29 1989 11:35

Need detailed electronic procedure for testing a Trimble Loran Coupler

I have a used Coupler for a Trimble Loran but I want to test it
before I use it to replace my present coupler which has been physically
     damaged.
I talked with Trimble Customer Service yesterday and they want
a minimum of $75.00 to test it for me. Even though it involves using
a spectrum analyser and other fancy electronics testers that seems
    high to me.
Can anyone tell me what equipment I will need and how to go
about testing it myself. This used coupler was the original coupler
when my Loran was installed. I replaced it three years ago when
another boat rode up on my stern at the mooring and I suspected
that it had been damaged. Now I'm having second thoughts. It shows
no physical damage, but I want to be positive that it is electronically
sound before I use it again.

                                           Thanks,

                                            Jack

well, nobody responded to Jack's inquiry last year. Hope I have
    better luck!

My question is about a Micrologic 5000 Loran. I picked it up in
Santa Barbara at a flee market & brought it back to Massachusetts.
It has a batterypack to run it for 6 hours, and an antenna coupler
mounted on it , with a 56 inch or so collapsable antenna. So it can
be used as a portable. I did get the operators manual, dated 1983.
It shows the unit also as a permanent instalation, without battery
pack. The antenna is shown and it has the antenna coupler as a
part of the base of the antenna.

I tried it out this weekend on the boat (did not leave dock). By
golly, it seems to work, at least the basics. I ran it off ships
battery as the portable battery pack had gone to sleep.

I'm sure I'll be calling Micrologic, but...

Question. Any reason not to add a connector to the Ant. Coupler that
is physically mounted on the Loran and run 50 ohm cable to one of the
standard antennas available today? This would be in parallel with
    the collapsable antenna.

Anyone know when the 5000 series was on the market?
