1400.0. "Sunbrella source?" by FRAGIL::MCBRIDE () Mon Nov 27 1989 09:32

    I did a cursory scan for information on canvas sources and found zip.
    We are going to make several canvas items this winter like a windlass
    cover, recovering some cushions and possible winch covers. I am looking
    for a source for Sunbrella, preferably discounted, by the yard. Any
    recommendations? Any other canvas brand recommendations?

    Thanks,

    Brian

1400.1HOOD CANVAS WORKS(?)SALEM::KLOTZMon Nov 27 1989 10:5511
    Hi,
    	I had a new back enclosure made by HOOD CANVAS WORKS INC in
    	Amesbury this spring - & they used Sunbrella canvas.

    	Try calling Mark Hood (508) 388-4071 - Mark might be willing
    	to sell you th canvas.

    	I know that if he does the work his prices are on the high side
        of competitive; but, the quality is there & ya get what ya pay
        for.

    You can get Sunbrella canvas from Fabric Works at 32 Mt.Auburn st in
    Watertown,tel. (617)926-4353. It comes in different colors and for
    46" width it costs $ 12 to $ 13 per yard. I bet you can find it in
    other places that sell fabric.

    Good question, I think they are trying to do it either by hand or with
    a heavy duty needle in your standard Singer. I'll ask my partner this
    weekend.

    We have the regular Singer machine home and my wife had some problems
    working on canvas,even with very large needles.Then we read someplace
    that it would be much easier if the thread go throu a cotton ball,
    before it goes to the needle,that is saturated with silicon.
    Now we have a spray can or two and we make sure that the cotton ball is
    always wet with it.It works for us much,much better now.
