1363.0. "Columbia 9.6?" by BOSCH::GORIN () Fri Oct 06 1989 18:22

    I have an opportunity to buy a 1978 Columbia 9.6. Unfortunately I know
    very little about them. I would be using it for day sailing, cruising
    and occasional racing. I would appreciate any information you could
    give me about its sailing characteristics, weak/strong points, etc.

1363.2Get an Opinion from Cruising WorldASDS::GARDINERArchitects-R-UsThu Oct 12 1989 00:1016
    I have a Columbia 29 built in 1965 by Whitiker Marine in Virginia. My
    boat was a Sparkman and Stephens design. Columbia moved to Bill Tripp
    design in 1967-1968 and then to another designer (I don't remeber the
    name) after abourt 1975. Finnally going out of business around 1983.
    They sold their molds to Hughes Marine in Canada, but very few Hugnes/
    Columbias were ever built or sold.

    I don't know much about your boat, but I would suggest that you call
    Cruising World magazine in Newport for a reference to an owner. They
    have a list of owner's that will give you info on practically any boat.
    The section is called "Another Opinion" and Columbia 9.6 is listed.

    Enjoy!

1363.3WATER WATER EVERYWHEREVBV01::HJOHNSONHank Johnson DTN 373-5443Fri Oct 13 1989 12:5312
    My first boat was a Columbia 8.3 build in Chesapeake Virginia.

    The boat sailed well and the Volvo Diesel never failed.

    I did have a full time job keeping out the freshwater. The cabin
    windows required a lot of work and the design made the task very
    difficult. The interior headliner was difficult to remove making
    tracing the leaks a real bear. Mildew in the headliner was another
    byproduct.
