1349.0. "Clark's in Jamestown?" by FRAGIL::MCBRIDE () Wed Sep 20 1989 16:13

    We have tentatively selected Clark's Yard in Jamestown as a winter
    storage place and we were wondering if this is a good choice. They
    are heavily oriented toward commercial work. Anyone had any
    experiences with Clark's? Our selection is based mainly upon that
    is where the boat is in the water. Their rates seem reasonable,
    $1,000 for haul, wash, stands, launch etc. for a 40' boat.

1349.1Reasonable for the areaJUPITR::KTISTAKISMike K.Wed Sep 20 1989 17:154
    It sounds reasonable.I paid the same amount for a 32' boat,including
    unsteping the mast,at Jamestown Marina.

1349.2Any utilities???CSSE::COUTUREAbandon shoreThu Sep 21 1989 10:446
    Will you have access to water and electricity? Although I
    moor my boat in Jamestown at The Conanicut Marina, I won't winter it
    there because no utilities are available. I move it up to The
    Masthead - $24 ft plus enough ups and extras to drive the price
    up to $970.

1349.3Mooring search...NETMAN::LAGOYThu Sep 21 1989 12:5416
    We presently moor our 25' Watkins at Kingman Marina in Cataumet. We
    have our name on a waiting list to get a mooring at Conanicut Marina.
    The folks there can't seem to give us a committment for a mooring in
    the spring and we have to pay for our mooring at Kingman's by late
    fall to insure we will have it next spring. We really want to move
    to R.I. but hate not to pay for our present mooring hoping something
    will come available at Conanicut - and then be stuck without anywhere
    to put the boat. How did you get your mooring at Conanicut? Did you
    just take a chance?

    If Conanicut doesn't work out for us, we were going to inquire about
    a town mooring in Newport... Anyone have any info on how to go about
    that?

    To get a private mooring in Newport you must own property in town
    and wait for about 10-20 years.

1349.5Utilities included at Clark'sICHI::MCBRIDEThu Sep 21 1989 14:1722
    Regarding utilities, we will have access to electric and water for
    the spring recommissioning extravaganza. This is included in the
    basic charge. All in all the price seems reasonable but not having
    any history with these folks I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
    We kept it in Bristol at Bristol Marine last year and were not
    pleased with work the yard performed or attitude prior to launching.

    Expenses for this year for staying in front of Clark's was $50.00.
    This was for the privelege of keeping the "dinghy from hell" in or
    near the dinghy rack. Our mooring was gratis since my partner knows
    a shore side resident very well and they liked having the boat in
    the "front yard". Not gonna argue with that. Needless to say we
    will be back there next year. I think Clark's maintains a few
    moorings that may be rentable. Don't know price or availability but
    you could call. There are no services available per se like fuel or
    water or launch service but they will let you park in the yard and
    charge a modest fee for dink storage. We are located just up from
    the Dumplings which puts us minutes from the ocean and Newport.

1349.6Mooring rock and rollJUPITR::KTISTAKISMike K.Thu Sep 21 1989 14:4132
    re.3:
    Last year I called Jamestown Marina from a telephone booth in
    Huntington NY and got a mooring waiting for me.I didn't know
    the Marina before,as a matter of fact when we were in the bay
    coming up I had to call them on the radio to direct me to their
    location.Last year also I noticed a lot of empty moorings.
    This year I mentioned to them that the business must be very good,
    because it seems that everything is filled up.
    One more thing you have to consider,I know that Jamestown is next
    to Mecca and 10 minutes from the Ocean,which makes the location
    very desirable.However if you plan to do a lot of work on your boat
    on the mooring I suggest you think twice.The motion of the water
    and the currents make it so difficult and aggrevating that I am
    thinking of moving out of there.
    Anytime me and my wife go there to work on the boat it becomes
    Vietnam revised,always my fault,the fatigue sets on me whithin two
    hours and I become so wild I am scaring even myself.So now when
    it is work my wife and kids stay home,so I only have to fight
    with myself,which I do.
    Another think is that the whole family gets sea sick on the mooring,
    if we stay long,something we have not experienced ever in rough
    seas when sailing or been on any other type of vessel on the go.
    The last thing,my wife noticed that hardly anybody else is around
    on the neighboring boats,forget about working on them and we are
    talking mostly about weekends.But as I said before these people
    are yachters we are boaters.

    Go for it Brian.

    The same boat in Marblehead is about $3.00 per sq. ft. which works
    out to about $1500. And for all that money they don't let you work
    on the boat below the waterline. The Storage area is adjacent to
    the town dump. The only water and power is what you can bring in
    on your own.

    If the available space at Clark's is only what I saw, I'd recommend
    making an immediate reservation. Looks like they'd fill up fast.

1349.8STORAGE RATESILO::TFOOTEMon Sep 25 1989 13:1315
    Can't help chipping in even though what I have to say does'nt help the
    conversation in this note. My boat is based in Galway on the West coast
    of Ireland where some years we do not get summer! Now and again I envy
    those of you who are nice and snug in marinas and close to all
    facilities,but every so often notes pertaining to the sort of costs
    some of you face for liftout etc raise my spirits a little and I
    realise that perhaps I am quite fortunate. No mooring charges aside
    from the cost of putting it down yourself and maintaining it and
    roughly 40 dollars to lift out or lift in a 30 footer.No storage
    charges and water and electricty laid on.
    Hope you don't feel bad.
    Regards,
    Tom
