1344.0. "Manchester Marine burns" by CDR::SPENCER (John Spencer) Wed Sep 13 1989 08:44

News flash this morning: Manchester Marine boatyard in Manchester, MA is
currently burning, 10 alarms sounded. I'll include more details in a
reply tonight, after the local paper coverage has arrived.

If that's where your winter storage reservations are, beat the crunch and
call your #2 this morning!

Yes heard it on WEEI this morning. Plenty of time to listen as there
was a 7 mile backup on rte 128 South. A truck spilled some a whole
bunch of pipes on the road. Great morning so far.

The radio said 2 buildings had been destroyed - Manchester Marine. I
can't remember names of yards down there but Crockers was one of them.
10 towns provided fire engines, plus USCG had boats spraying water.
Flames went up 100 feet, black smoke et al. Started 5am. Currently
    they don't suspect foul play.

Is that George's Welch's place? Manchester marine. On the left as you
go in to the harbor area.

>>>  Is that George's Welch's place?

George used to manage it, though he's been gone a few years now. It's
still owned by Tom Sturdevant (for 20 years), who lives on the other side
of the tracks up Ashland Ave.

Two MM buildings were totally lost: the main office building, which also
housed the carpentry and machine shops, and a storage building. Sadly,
they lost all their records, and a bunch of nifty memorabilia. Many
workmen lost all their tools.

The other MM buildings were saved, as apparently were the boats at the
dock -- the CG was there with two 41-footers and had pumps going during
pretty much the whole thing on the waterside. Crocker's yard was not
damaged at all.

On tonight's Ch 4 news, Sturdevant said he'd be all cleaned up in two
weeks, and would resume more or less normal business thereafter. So it
looks like storage will still be available to those who reserved, even
though some who requested indoor will now get outdoor.
