1320.0. "Casco Bay moorings/storage" by BANZAI::EASTLAND () Mon Aug 28 1989 12:17

We are taking Cap Aux Isles, a 36-foot Columbia, from Gloucester to Casco bay
in a few weeks. As time is short this year and I can't take a week or so off, I
was thinking of leaving the boat at a mooring at the end of the weekend and
then going back the following weekend to bring her back (or cruise around
Casco some more and bring her back the following weekend). Can anyone recommend
a marina where we might get a decent deal for a mooring for a week or more?

Also, another thought is to winter the boat in Maine this year. We are being
asked to pay $3 sq foot for winter storage in Mass and that doesn't include any
extras like hauling the boat or unstepping the mast. Can anyone recommend any
Maine yards where they can also undertake some glass work on the boat?

Thanks in advance for any information anyone has

1320.1Try Handy Boat ServiceSAGE::WALKER_KMon Aug 28 1989 13:1213
    I've been keeping boats at Handy Boat in Falmouth Foreside for the
    past 10 or so years. They have rental moorings by the day/week for
    transients. I'm not sure what their storage rates are for this winter
    but I'm sure they'll send you a price sheet. I can highly recommend
    their service shop, my last boat got very banged in hurricane whatever
    it was a few years ago. Handy did all the fiberglass work and finished
    it off with an Awlgrip job. I was very satisified and so was the
    surveyor. There are several other places you may want to check.
    The Yarmouth Boat Yard is up the Royal River in Yarmouth but is
    reasonable and good. There are a couple of yards in South Freeport,
    Strouts Point Marine comes to mind. Phone number for Handy Boat
    is 207 781 5110.

    Dolphin Marina at Basin Cove, So. Harpswell may be cheaper than Handy's
    for short term moorings. It's a pretty low key place. 207-833-6000

    They are cheap for winter storage, but have no facilities for glass
    work if you need that done.

    You might try Stroughts Point Wharff - South Freeport. They rent
    moorings by the day, week, etc. 207-865-3899

1320.4Thanx - I called DolphinSQLRUS::EASTLANDThu Sep 07 1989 13:127

    Thanx for your help, all. So far I only tried Dolphin. At $10 per
    linear foot that's less than a third of the price at Gloucester Yankee
    marine here in Mass.

    I guess we'll be wintering up there...

The Dolphin's just down Basin Pt. Road from my wife's sister. It's a very
pretty spot but very unprotected. It's right out on the end of Basin Point in
South Harpswell. The wind can get pretty amazing there at times. On the
posative side, the resteraunt has some of the best deserts north of Portland 8^)

    Thanx all for the input. We took the boat from Gloucester to Dolphin
    marina Sunday and Monday with a stopover in Kennebunkport. First day,
    25-35 knot winds and 10-15 foot seas. Second not really enough wind
    but very relaxing way to go across the Bay. You've got some
    fantastic-looking islands out there. Who owns that big house cut into
    the side of the island close to the first red nun marker buoy (no 4 I
    think) as you enter Potts harbor? What a place! Forgive me for not
    remembering the name of the island. What with Junk Of Pork, Brown Cow,
    Haddocks et al, I got island-overload

	I think that you are talking about Admiral Perry's place on
Eagle Is. Its a museum with guided tours. I haven't been there, but I hear
its a great place to visit. Check your crusing guide.

	(Travis, Have I got the right place?)
