1304.0. "Admirals Cup." by CHEST::BARKER (In the words of Marcel Marceau....) Thu Aug 10 1989 08:24

	Hot off the presses.......

Great Britain have provisionally won the Admirals Cup. Their
three boat team of Jamerella, Juno & Indulgence have done
sufficiently well in the 605 mile Fastnet Race to hold off
	the strong Danish challenge.

The top individual boat in the Fastnet will probably be the
American entry 'Great News', although US hopes of doing well
as a team were dashed by the dismasting of their one tonner
	Bravura.

More details as they become available.

( For those that don't know, the Admirals Cup is the premier
team event in International Offshore racing. Each team consists
of three boats, rating between 30' & 40' IOR, and the racing
consists of 4 inshore and 2 offshore races, the last of which
is the classic Fastnet, which starts from Cowes, Isle of Wight,
goes round the Fastnet rock, which is off the south west tip
of Ireland, and finishes in Plymouth )

More! More! It's damn near impossible to get results out of the
paper. Have to wait for my Seahorse to get the full story.

        Comments.

The winning margin was one of the smallest ever, Indulgence had
to finish higher than 25th to ensure a win. She finished 20th.
If the Danish boat Andlesbanken had not lost her forestay whilst
leading the 4th Inshore race, Denmark would have won the cup.
The Danish boat Container was left out of the German team, but was
snapped up by the Danes, who decided correctly that the 50 footers
would do well under revised rating rules. American ( actually
Australian, under US charter ) boats came 1st & 8th in the Fastnet,
but they were let down by the dismasting of Bravura, near the Rock.

Conditions for the Fastnet started off very light, but near the rock
they had Force 7 winds and very heavy rain. Great News won the overall
prize, also beating the non-Admirals Cup boats.

This is Britains first win since 1981.

                 forecast. YUK! )
