1301.0. "Who was that Masked Man?" by ESKWYR::YOUNG () Mon Aug 07 1989 15:39

    I was sitting on the deck of our boat yesterday at our mooring at
    Kingman Marina, Cataument/Pocasset, MA. Norm Burbine/"ANZO" motored
    by and gave a yell. However, a Pearson 36' was just two moorings
    from me with the name "Sea Change". When the skipper left the mooring
    in the late afternoon, he "sailed" around me and as I bid him a
    good sail, he caught the name "Gail Warnings" on my stern and asked
    if I were at DEC? I answered affirmative--I'm a temp. He said
    he'd call me. I yelled that I was at MRO3, but with that wind on
    Sunday, doubt if he heard me. I looked under Note 1239, but don't
    see a Pearson with that name. He hailed from Boston. Does anyone
    know who it was? Few hrs. later, as I came up on deck/DEC, LARUS
    went past me. I forgot the name of the skipper (it's John), so
    I yelled "Hey, Digital". Still windy so couldn't hear me. Friend
    along saw I was waving and yelling, so pointed me out to him. He
    gave a wave, but I guess he was saying to himself, "Who the heck
    is that crazy woman?" As he tied up at the fuel dock, he saw the
    boat name and said...."Ahh, GAIL WARNINGS!"

    (So get to the point, Gail.) Any Buzzards Bay sailors/first mates
    interested in meeting up some time before fall rears its ugly (alright
    not so ugly, but colder) head in our area?

    Also, Peter & I (I introduced ourselves in Note 1199), are starting
    our vacation this Friday (8/11). Planning on heading for Cuttyhunk
    and spending Sat and Sun there and then leaving for Menemsha on
    Monday. Spend night or 2 there and head over to Lake Tashmoo.
    Spend couple nights there and eventually head home, maybe with stop
    at Hadley Harbor on Sat night. Back to marina on Sunday.

    My question is this. Husband has almost 25 yrs. experience (started
    young) most of it over the puddle in the UK. This is our first
    trip (just we 2) cruising for over a week. Should we cut out a
    day or two on M/V and try to include Block Island? Also, any
    suggestions or comments re what we should be sure to have on board
    that we'll have a hard time finding on shore? Or, any tips on things
    to avoid (rocks, certain currents, anchorages,etc) or conversely,
    sites to definitely include? I was reading The Crusing Guide yesterday
    and also another book I bought last yr. about the Islands of New
    England or something like that.

    Anything anyone can write will be appreciated.

                           Thx, "Gail Warnings"

1301.1Masked ManVOLVO::WHITEMon Aug 07 1989 17:5114
    Hi, Gail.

    I've sent you a mail message "unmasking" the culprit. Hope you got
    it.

    A Buzzard Bay sailors get together is a good idea. These things
    usually need some lead time and some amount of planning. What did
    you have in mind for a date?

    Hmmm!! 25 years of experience is a good thing to take along. Looks like
    your ready to ship out!!

    Peter

1301.2Rendezvous would be funFRAGIL::MCBRIDEMon Aug 07 1989 18:257
    A Buzzard's rendezvous would be fun for those of us south of the
    cape. Cutty Hunk or other would be a good in between spot. We
    may be in Cutty Hunk this weekend. Look for St. Kilda, PH Sloop,
    white.

1301.3I'd skip Block IslandCURIE::FSMITHMon Aug 07 1989 20:0314
    Having just spent a week going from Boston to Sandwich to Newport to
    Block Island to Onset to Boston (on a powerboat), I could have skipped
    Block Island in favor of more time in any of the other spots. I guess
    that I can now say that I've been to Block Island, however I'm fairly
    certain that I will not go again soon. I believe that you'll find more
    things to do and places to explore on the Vineyard. I would also
    suggest Newport as an alternative. Lots of activity and good
    boat/people watching. Hope you have fair weather whatever your choice.

1301.4NOT MASKED MANGIAMEM::BURBINETue Aug 08 1989 08:5714
Hi Gail,
Sorry for not stopping but I had to get back to do some work on a
dock.
Next time I will stop for some of that coffee on the new stove
ok?

By the way don't be in a rush to go far it is really nice hanging
around the islands in our area. Not too much to due in Block
Island and lately it seems to be getting a lot of bad press.

1301.5Well, I'd Go Back to Block IslandSMVDV1::JMAITue Aug 08 1989 08:5911
    We sailed to Block Island from Gloucester a few years ago,and had
    a GREAT time. We took our time down & back, & spent a couple of
    days on the Island -- I thought there was plenty to do & see, for
    a short period of time. I'd do it again. But if you have only
    1 week, your trip may not be as relaxed as ours was.

1301.6It Seems We've Stood & Talked Like This Before...ESKWYR::YOUNGTue Aug 08 1989 12:2641
                  -< Who knows where or when?>-
    Peter--We'll be gone w/e's of 8/12 and 8/19.  Perhaps w/e after
    that would be a good time to arrange for us Buzzards Bay crazies
    to raft up at say, Bassett's--then it's not a long drive "home"!
    We've had 2 other boats raft up to ours at our Kingman mooring,
    but not sure how the marina feels abt that.

    Brian--We're hoping to make Cuttyhunk on Saturday. I will look
    for St. Kilda and you look for "Gail Warnings"--0'day 27. How many
    will be on her? Just my husband & I will be aboard.

    Fred--Thx for yr. input. Actually hadn't thought of Newport--been
    there many times as a landlubber, never approached by boat. We're
    going there for the In-Water Sailboat Show on 9/9 anyway. As my
    B'day is 9/7, maybe husband will buy me a Legend 37" or an Irwin
    (boy, I must be sun-stroked!)! I've been in communication with
    the heavenly gods and we will only accept weather a la Caribbean!

    Norm--Both burners are now working! I agree with you abt. relaxing!
    I mean this is called "pleasure boating", n'est-ce pas? Seems we're
    always in a hurry to get somewhere and then it's time to move on.
    However, we are serious shutterbugs (do free-lance too)--usually
    prefer rock concerts over nature. BTW, what's the bad press on Block
    I. lately? See ya, round the channel!

    Julie--My husband & I were discussing Cheoy Lee's this a.m.--how
    nice for you! Was thinking if we had one we could call her Cheoy
    Boat (groan). Think you may be right. I would like to make the
    sail sometime to Block I., but this may be too rushed. Mahther's
    Vineyahd beckons and I must respond to her. Guess I'm an Island
    Girl at heart.

    TO ANYONE: Anyone have Rolling Stones tix to sell or swap for a
    sail?  Such a deal!?

    Gotta cruise,

    Gail
