1291.0. "Public Docking in Rockport, MA" by YODA::FORTUNA (Steve Fortuna....DTN..247-2061.) Wed Jul 26 1989 16:25

    Hi

    	Does any one out there know if there are public docks located at
    Rockport, MA? If so where are they located? We would like to take
    a day trip down from the Merrimack River.

    	If you would happen know if we can just drive up or do we have
    to connect someone before going down?

    Thanks for any help,

    Steve Fortuna

1291.1Not much public accomodationNOVA::EASTLANDThu Jul 27 1989 11:308
    The only public landing I know of is for short stops to pick up
    groceries, drop people off etc. in Rockport harbor itself. There's also
    Pigeon Cove harbor further north which is mainly used by fishermen.

    I would suggest calling the Rockport harbormaster Jim Blake at
    508-546-9334.

1291.2Rockport landings and mooringsCDR::SPENCERJohn SpencerThu Jul 27 1989 14:5221
.1 is correct.

There are really three public landings, but none of them allow you to tie
up for more than a few minutes, and you can't leave your boat unattended.
They are in Rockport Harbor, right at the end of T-Wharf adjacent to the
yacht club; Granite Pier, to the right as you enter; and Pigeon Cove, near
the N.E. Lobster Co. (This last is very much a working harbor, so enjoying
the smell of bait is an asset!)

If you call Jim ahead of time, you might ask if you could spend the night
tied up alongside either the Sandy Bay Yacht Club or next to the Motif #1.
the former is darker and quieter, but may be slightly rolly in a SE or
easterly breeze. The latter is still, but T-Wharf floodlights tend to
keep it bright at night. In either case, you may well be rafted with
another boat if the weather is quiet.

You might also get a mooring overnight if you ask -- a lot depends on the
day you'll arrive, other overnight requests, and the size of your boat.

Good luck,  J.

1291.3Try Lobster CoveVELVET::SAVAGEThu Aug 03 1989 16:0810
    Instead of Rockport, try Lobster Cove, just up the Annisquam (sp?)
    coming from the north. They have transient moorings and dock space.
    They also have a little store from ice and supplies and there used
    to be a resturant. I haven't been there this year yet so I don't
    know if the resturant is still open. Of course, that part
    of Cape Ann is pretty residential, so you are on you own for
    entertainment. There is also the Annisquam yacht club, just before
    you get to Lobster Cove.

    I haven't been down there this Summer, but my Mother tells me that
    there's a new "yacht club" in the small harbor on the Western side
    of Bearskin Neck, facing towards Front Beach. When I was a kid,
    I think this was called White Wharf, but it hasn't been available
    to boats for some years due to the shallow bottom.

    I'm told that one of the locals has built what sounds like a marina
    there with moorings, dockage and food service. I'll have to check
    it out next time I'm down there.

1291.5Old Harbor Yacht ClubAIADM::SPENCERJohn SpencerMon Oct 23 1989 14:3817
RE: .4,

Yes, there is a new little Old Harbor Yacht Club (as they call
themselves), with floats, basic dockside hookups (but no fuel), and food
of the mediocre variety right next door. And car parking for members, not
unimportant when you're talking downtown Rockport in summer.

When they were hungry for folks to sign up, the price was running around
$100/ft per summer. Draft is definitely constrained, I'd guess to around
4' despite the dredging they had done a couple years ago.

Entrance could be *very* tricky in a strong nor-easter -- with a quite
narrow entrance and stone walls either side, there is literally no room
for error.

SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE SUMMER WE SAIL UP TO ROCKPORT FROM BOSTON.
WE ANCHOR IN THE SMALL COVE NORTH OF BEARSKIN NECK RIGHT AT THE OPENING TO
THE OLD HARBOR YACHT CLUB. THEY'RE VERY FRIENDLY AND LET YOU DOCK YOUR DINGHY
AND DROP OFF TRASH...ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE ANCHORAGE IS NE WEATHER...WHEN THAT'S
PREDICTED WE DON'T GO NORTH FROM BOSTON ANYHOW....
