1271.0. "Cuttyhunk fire Monday night?" by SHIPIT::MCBRIDE () Wed Jul 05 1989 11:17

    Were there any other DEC sailors in Cuttyhunk Monday night to see
    the fire in the harbor? We never found out what was burning, if
    it was on land or afloat but the blaze lasted a long time and grew
    quite large. Anyone have the scoop?

    I waqs not there myself but I heard from another boat that it was
    actually the brush on fire not any boats. The fire was set off by
    some fireworks deployed privately from boats.

    I was in Cuttyhunk Tuesday and saw no evidence of a fire, nor was
    anyone talking about one. Tuesday evening there were LOTS of fireworks
    (although the fog obscured most of them) so there apparently wasn't
    any attempt at inhibiting the festivities.

1271.3Flames were quite high at one pointSHIPIT::MCBRIDETue Jul 11 1989 18:338
    We were ashore with some folks from another boat to light some of
    our own fireworks away from the crowded anchorage and noticed quite
    a large blaze towards the inner harbor. It appeared that there
    were lots of folks scurrying around trying to put it out. It finally
    died down quickly after burning vigorously for several minutes.
    Did notice a few boats leave the harbor at the same time. Just
    curious.

1271.4CarelessnessMKTLAW::PRUCHAWed Jul 12 1989 14:5713

    We were moored in the Inner Harbour and witnessed the incident.
    Apparently, some boaters were careless and shot some fireworks off
    in the wrong direction, and they landed in the brush/grass near
    the inner part of the channel. At first we thought it was a barnfire
    in connection with the large boat party being held at the pier directly
    across the channel. But the next thing we new, it was rapidly being
    extinguished. Tuesday morning, while leaving the harbour, we saw
    the large burnt and charred area where the fire had taken place.
    The "townies" were angerly chatting it up in town that morning.

1271.5Fire on the North Shore?MCS873::KALINOWSKIMon Jun 13 1994 11:568
    Saturday, while starting to head out of Salem Ma, I heard a frantic
    distress call on 16 about a boat fire. It sounded close, though I
    didn't see any smoke. About 11:20 some salvage company was asking the
    Coast Guard for Loran Coordinates for the boat as it evidently sunk.

    Anyone hear more about this?
