In order to make the race a little fairer the woman who is doing the Endeavour restoration is having new sails made for Shamrock as well. Hood is doing the job. The mains are 5 times as big as those built for maxi rater IOR boats! One of the guys who sails with us (Tim Askew) is going to be trimming the "upper clew" of Endeavor's jib (quadrilatoral jibs). Pretty bizarre. Dave | |||||

We were docked close to Shamrock yesterday and I had a long discussion to one of the people fitting it out. It is an amazing sight. It has 3 sets of movable backstays, distributed along the mast. Major modifications were done, including lowering and reducing the size of the above-deck cabin, and replacing solid side rails with usual wire lifelines. It is painted the original dark shamrock green, apparently characteristic of Sir Thomas Lipton's boats. And, of course, the entire super structure is bright work except for the decks which are teak. Quite a sight. I suggest anyone who can to see it. It's now part of the yachting museum there, so should become even more accessible in the future. /Don |
