1250.0. "High Altitude Sailing" by NEXUS::L_BRODEUR () Wed Jun 14 1989 20:09

    ANY HIGH ALTITUDE SAILORS OUT THERE? I LIVE IN COLORADO SPRINGS
    AND I'M ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE WHO ENJOY THE SPORT OUT HERE.
    THERE ARE PLACES TO SAIL HERE, I'VE SAILED LAKE POWELL IN UTAH
    AND LAKE FLAMING GORGE WYOMING AS WELL AS LAKE MC PHIE COLORADO.
    I'M LOOKING FOR NEW PLACES TO SAIL THIS SEASON, ANY IDEAS?

1250.1LAKE Geneva for the best sailing!SHIRE::MEYERI'd rather be sailing & catching large troutsThu Jun 15 1989 04:0411
   	Monsieur Brodeur, you might enjoy sailing on Lake Geneva,
    surrounded by Alps, famous vineyards & Castles built in the Middle
    Ages, that appear most often on Chocolate boxes.

    	It is 45 miles long & around ten miles wide, & banana shaped
	with the Rhone river crossing it. It is famous for lots of fine
    	fishing, which I enjoy doing as I sail...

1250.2WHAT ABOUT PARANOA LAKEVAXRIO::FERNANDOThu Jun 15 1989 14:0010
    Hi Brodeur,

    I dont know how far and high you want to sail. If you want to come
    down here in Brasilia/Brazil we have a nice lake and it is at 1000
    meters altitude.

    You can use my boat and will be very welcome.

    Regards, Fernando.

1250.3is lake Dillon the highest?NEXUS::L_BRODEURThu Jun 15 1989 18:5414
    I would love to sail lake Geneva, but it's a lot of ocean to cross
    to get there. Now as for Brazil, thats a possibility, I could
    drive there.

    I have a trailerable 22 ft boat which I have sailed
    in places such as Buzzards bay off from Massachusets, Pamlico sound
    off the coast of North Carolina and the gulf of Mexico off the florida
    coast. Living now in Colorado, It's about 2 days driving to get
    to an ocean so I am enjoying the lakes that are within a days drive
    of here. There are some lakes here such as lake Dillon in the heart
    of ski country which claims to be the worlds highest yacht club.
    The altitude is about 10,000 ft. I plan to try and get the boat
    there this summer, it must be ice free by now.

    Hello,

    I am also a Colorado Springs resident with my boat, 27' Catalina,
    slipped at the North Shore Marina at Pueblo Lake just 35 miles
    south of the Springs. Right now the water level is dowwn about
    twenty vertical feet, but still plenty of room.

1250.5Low tide in coloradoNEXUS::L_BRODEURThu Jun 15 1989 23:0416

    Hi Rob,

    Yes I've been to Pueblo reservoir and I considered renting a slip
    there, but after seeing the lake on a busy weekend I decided to
    just trailer to different places to see what it's like.

    I heard that John Martins Reservoir has new boat ramps this year
    but the water level is so low that the ramps are out of the water.
    I would hope that after all this rain that the level would go up
    enough to launch a boat.

1250.6Colo. Lake sailingMED::BELLThu Jul 06 1989 10:1915
    I lived for many years in Colorado and have sailed at one time or
    another in most of the larger mountain lakes. I like lake Granby
    the best. It has many interesting coves inlets etc. to explore
    and is a excellent camping area. The fishings good and I have never
    seen to many boats on the lake ( can't say this about most lakes
    close to Denver. Lake Dillon is also good and its a bit closer
    if your into racing its the best choice. There are a couple of
    good lakes in the foothills above Ft. Collins but that would be
    as far a drive as lake Dillon.

1250.7BLUE MESA OR BLEW MESACSC32::L_BRODEURMon Jul 10 1989 22:3315
    I just returned from 2 week vacation. During which time I tried out 2
    new to me lakes. One was Blue Mesa, I was very impressed with the
    wind there. Every day around noon, the wind picks up continuously to
    a rough guess about 25 to 30 miles an hour with some very strong gusts
    and shifty winds, winds were for the most part out of the southeast.
    While sailing back in single handed from an exciting trip up the lake
    and back, I had to lower sails so I tied down the tiller and went up
    on deck to lower them. the boat was headed into the wind at that time
    suddenly a gust of wind hit the starboard side and spun the bow of the
    boat into the wind with such intensity that the rudder cracked between
    the tiller handle and the kick up rudder. I was only about 200 yds
    from the marina at the time so I didn't have much problem getting back
    in,  Whew!

1250.8Lake Navajo nice place to goCSC32::L_BRODEURMon Jul 10 1989 22:5723
    The trip from Blue Mesa back to Colorado Springs was about 5 hrs when
    pulling a boat, the worst part is going over monarch pass elev 10,400
    ft. I repaired the rudder by sheathing it in 1/8 in. anodized
    aluminum. Time to try a new lake, this time I decided to go to lake
    Navajo on the Colorado New Mexico border, this a days trip from home.
    Lake Navajo is about 40 mi. long and in parts 1 to 2 mi. wide. There
    is a Colorado State park there, where you can get a lakeside camp site
    and beach the boat right next to your camp site in a protected cove. I
    was impressed, they even had warm showers at the campground. The lake
    is warmer than Blue Mesa and You can actually swim in it, swim in Blue
    Mesa and you come out blue, it's cold!

    the sailing wasn't much different than Blue Mesa, very impressive
    winds for sailing, watch out for wind shifts though they can be very
    suprising. At times I was sailing with just the mainsail up, this
    made my wife feel a little more comfortable. The lake isn't too
    crowded either, there's some large sailboats on this lake which makes
    it nice not being the only sailboat on the lake.

    I liked both lakes but prefer Navajo to Blue Mesa.
