1241.0. "Bad Sunday" by CSSE::COUTURE (Abandon shore) Mon Jun 12 1989 11:46

    Does anybody know any of the details on a couple of incidents that
    happened this Sunday?

    1. I saw a large (around 50 ft.) sailboat limping into Newport with
    the mast in two parts. Around 12:15 near Brenton Reef Light. I
    couldn't get close enough to get a good look, but they seemed to be
    limping in under power.

    2. My wife heard a mayday and a LOT of CG traffic re. a sailboat
    somewhere on Nantucket Sound. I heard that some poor sailor
    swallowed the anchor on that one, but don't know any details.

    We heard of two "lost" fishing boats while monitoring channel 16 on the
    way to Scituate Friday afternoon. The CG reported finding one of them,
    don't know the fate of the other.

    It was rough out there this week-end.

Monday's Boston Globe has a short article on a sailor that was found dead.
There was a early Sunday morning accident (time was given, but I forgot it)
between a 19 foot sailboat and a fishing net. The net won. The three other
crew members made it to shore, and called the CG after breaking into a house.

    Subsequent reports indicated that this was a power boat, not a
    sailboat. The victim was a young man from Acton, Mass.

    They were cutting between two islands when they hit the net under
    power. Two people were thrown in the water by the abrupt stop. One of
    them apparently hit his head on a log that was used to buoy the nets or
    a log caught in the nets (?). This was at 3 am, so they didn't see the net
    and had to grope in the dark while diving for the missing person.

    Can fisherman place nets complete with obstructions wherever they want?

1241.5Charts Show Where the Fish Wiers AreCURIE::FSMITHTue Jun 20 1989 16:478
    I don't believe that fishermen can place nets wherever they want.
    However there are areas on the charts which list fish wiers. The area
    that this boat was in had these marked on the chart. I have to believe
    that the boat operator was not using (did not have) a chart of the area
    that they were in. It was 3:00 AM and they had been partying. It still
    was a tragedy however.
