Does anyone have any experience with a rope-to-chain splice? The
latest issue of Cruising World describes the process and it looks
like an excellent solution to the problem of draging the thimble
and shackle through the bow roller as you haul the anchor. I would
be somewhat concered about chafe on the first link or, worse yet,
if the whole thing began to unravel. Any information?

I saw the same article and tried it. My rode had a big thimble
which was going to be a problem on a new bow roller I made. The
article came out just when I was pondering this so I tried it.
I have three strand nylon so I had to wing it some but the splicing
went fine. The most difficult part of the whole operation is the
first 'tuck' when everything is flopping around. By the third
tuck it begins to firm up a bit. The siezing really gives it
a lot of additional stability.
It's a joy with my roller. If you closed your eyes you would never
know the chain is aboard. I've only anchored with it once and
it came through ok but this was not severe conditions. I'm still
not sure I'll sleep well with it until It's been through something
tougher.
Regarding chafe, I only got chafe before at/near the thimble and
I really don't think this will be a problem because now there is
nothing but smooth transitions from rode to chain and the transition
is totally covered to boot.
