1229.0. "Stars & Stripes in Switzerland ?" by LEJABY::VASIC () Mon Jun 05 1989 13:20

I've read in the Swiss press that Dennis Conner will come in Switzerland with
Stars & Stripes, in june 89, for a famous Swiss sailing race called "Bol d'Or"
(Gold Cup).

Has anybody heard or read something about that, in U.S. press ?

Having lost the cup in the courts, he might not be so news worthy
on the otherside of the pond, however the Digital Sailing Club in
Geneva plans to be on the lake & watch him fly past, let alone compete
    with young Dennis.

I read yesterday where Stars & Stripes had been confiscated by federal
marshalls as a result of actions taken by some of DC's creditors.

Starts & Stripes is in the Evian harbour (on the Geneva lake).
She will participate to the Bol d'Or (Gold Cup), and then will be exhibited
in Europe to be sold.

The Bol d'Or is a race with more than 600 boats on the starting line.
Wind is usually ligth, but as on any other mountain lakes, heavy gusts are
not unusual ... I'm looking forward to see what Stars & Stripes will do ...

I went down to EVIAN on the French side of Lake Geneva last
night & saw & touched Stars & Stripes. It had just been assembled
by the waters edge, & the mast was on.

I thought that when they raced it in san Diego, they were using
foils rather than sails. Here it seems to be rigged for sails.

Let me tell you that the two hulls are HUGE, so much so that
it is too long to be classified in the gold cup race, but will race
all the same for the hell of it , & a new record no doubt.

There was a spare mast in two halves on the docK that we had
a look at. It is made of carbon fiber & is only one tenth of an
inch thick, quite mind blowing, when you see the length of it, &
the work loads it has to cope with.

The boat was due to be put in the water today. I noticed that
one of the hulls had a one square inch hole under the water line,
that will need fixing as it is in one of the water tight compartments.

My wife had a good laugh, when she looked inside the hull &
saw a wire basket full of an assortment of American sun tan lotions...

I wont be taking part in the race, but I will be going out early
on Saturday morning & with friends & my camera, hoping to get a
    few nice shots.
               Watch this space... Nick(M)
