1216.0. "Polar Passage" by AKOV11::KALINOWSKI () Tue May 23 1989 12:48

        Anyone catch "polar passage" on public TV last night? it is
    the story of two Canadiana who make the first sail-only crossing
    of the North West passage.

        They had a video cam for the last 800 KM. The pictures are
    great, as is the story. They took 3 years to complete the sail as
    they only got 30 days a year to pull it off. They used a Hobie 18
    as it can be pulled over the ice whenever they were blocked in.

        There are some great live scenes of their pan (hunk of ice one
    calls terra-firma when there is no land) breaking up during a storm
    and a feirce wind storm they hit crossing a 20 mile section of
    open ocean.

        Really well worth watching.

    I didn't see the tv show, but there was an article in the National
    Geographic. Quite an amazing feat.

    Yeah, I read the Nat Geo article this past week too. Incredible
    photography (typically N.G. quality). Excellent read.
