1207.0. "Cameras on boats?" by CHEFS::GOUGHP (Pete Gough @REO 830-6603) Fri May 12 1989 10:37

    A perpetual problem is what camera to take on the boat.........
    In the UK their are primarily two 35mm compact cameras that are
    waterproof to 10 meters, useful if they get wet in the Avon, they
    are the Minolta AWB that retails for between 130-150 pounds Sterling
    or Nikon which retails for about 120 pounds sterling. Our normal
    camera's require a reasonable amount of care while on board, ie
    special bags etc.

    What do you do about camera's? What "waterproof cameras are available
    in the US and for what price?

If you already have a "normal camera" you like and trust, have you
considered buying one of the specialty waterproof camera bags now made?
They have a clear glass lens built right in, and use a rollover top with
bolted frame to keep the water out -- technology inherited from kayaking,
apparently. Finger indentations at the appropriate places allow easy
operation of most every picture-taking control. If VHF bags of this sort
cost $25, and video camera bags run around $90, perhaps $50-75 would buy a
good 35mm-size bag.

    I tried a camera bag last year and the results were far from
    satisfactory and for some obscure reason the camera (a Cannon) sweated
    in the bag causing some interesting battery connect
    problems........hence we are thinking about a purpose built camera
    for the job and my initial note. May be the camera bags on your
    side of the pond are better and more advanced than ours. Any way
    thanks for the input.

1207.3Minolta WeathermaticAKOV12::DJOHNSTONMon May 15 1989 17:0111
    I have a Minolta "Weathermatic". It's 35mm, auto everything with
    a zoom feature. Also waterproff down to 3 meters. I have tested
    its underwater capabilities and was pleasantly surprised. It's
    bright yellow (easy to find in the duffel) and moderately armored,
    too.

    The cost is about $125 in Hong Kong and I've seen it here for $160.
    Recommend it highly.
