The date of the Learn to Sail class will be in the spring. I will
post the date and location when it becomes available.

Also note that the HOBIE 21 Nationals will be held in Falmouth
MA june 27 - 30. The race is co-sponsered by Cape Cod Watersports
(Dave Nolan) and Ensign Marine (Steve Ruhl). If you would like to
    help, give either a call.

1206.4Comp tip requirement for Regatta Racing AKOV11::KALINOWSKIFri Jan 19 1990 13:3417

Please note that for the 1990 regatta schedule, One must have a
Comptip equiped mast. This rule is in effect for all of the US. You
will be allowed to particpate in a single regetta with the older
style mast at which they will log your sail number. Any other regettas
you enter afterwards will cause you to be disqualified.

The cost of having a comptip modification is $0.00 . Just call
your local dealer and tell them what kind of a boat you have so they
can get the parts and schedule you in. Also, Hobie will warrant your
mast for 1 year after the modification against leakage and breakage.
It's free, It's safer, It makes everyone compete with identical boats.
    Call for your comptip now!!!!

If aren't sure you probably do not have one. The top third will be
fiberglass appearing with the lower part being metal. I used to have a
    79. The stock mast then was no comptip. You can have your local
dealer modify to a comtip with no charge. They are required for
regattas this year unless you have a renegade division (14) that will
not require them except for national points.

OK, what's a comptip? (I used to have a HOBIE 16, and I'm curious)

1206.8Non-Hobie owner's attempt at an answerNETMAN::CARTERWed Jan 31 1990 16:3011
I'm not a Hobie owner or sailor, but the way I understand it is, a
COMP-TIP is an electrically non-conductive tip on the top of the very
electrically conductive aluminum mast. It resulted from people
tangling the mast in power lines, making lots of sparks and then suing
the boat manufacturer. Presumably it is effective, but my Freedom
mast, made of carbon fiber with no standing rigging still had a warning
about staying away from overhead power lines. (The sail track on the
    Freedom was still aluminun.)

1206.9how is it doneKRAPPA::RHODESJim Rhodes @WFO 242-2795Thu Feb 01 1990 09:267
My mast is definately not a comptimp. Just to clarify this once more.
My dealer will replace/install with a comp timp mast?

How will this be done? By retrfitting my existing aluminum mast or
giving me a new comptimp mast?

    Very curious now.
1206.10DPDMAI::JOHNSONGFri Feb 02 1990 15:2810
They will take your current mast and cut it off above the tang
connection (where all the shroud lines and trap wires are connected)
then put a plug in the mast and then put the comp tip on the plug. If
you have this done you will want to make or buy a cover for the comptip
to make it last longer. Also be careful when you trailer it. If you
put the track side down it will wear against where it comes in contact
with the boat or rear support. Pad it real well or turn it over. I
think that the Dec or Jan issue of Hotline had several articles on the
comptip that you might want to read.

1206.11More on CompTipsAKOV11::KALINOWSKIThu Feb 08 1990 17:5946
The January issue of the Hobie Hotline does have several excelent
articles on it. One should trailer either type with the track up as
it keeps the track from getting dinged which hinders raising and
lowering the sail. The comptip should also be armor-all twice a year
to keep it from turning grey. I usally let it turn a bit grey and then
scrub the sucker with one of my SO nylons in armor-all. Comes out like
new! I find that some armor-all in the track
helps the sail slide up that last 2 feet much easier.

Another positive benefit is that the top sheave is replaced by two
smaller ones with a bit more slop in them. The reason this is a benefit
is the first time you turtle the sucker into beach sand (who me ???).
A pail of water will clear the sheaves while the older models sometimes
need to have most the specks picked out with a thin knife before they
turn. this can take up to 2 hours if you really gave it a good lumping.

If you have an older boat, having the comptip retro fitted will
automatically put a 1 year warranty into effect,so you can beat on your
boat without worry of the financial issues of a failure (note you still
    must worry about self-preservation ;>) ;>) ).

On a still air day, the 16s are a little bit off on performance (as
measured by someone who has gotten everything else out of the cat), and
in a blow they are a bit better since they will bend a bit more causing
    a more full sail shape.

On a Hobie 18, they are better all around since the mast is already very
stiff because of the diamond wires.

If you call one of the local dealers today, you could probably have it
done in the next couple of weekends. But then they start building the
90s for the new season, so give them a call today.

A great idea is to look at your mast before calling. Everything else
OK ? (i.e. base seam is working, tangs look ok, mast step still have
life in it?). IF not, make sure they will have the parts to do the
job at the same time. the tools needed to do these tasks are the same
and they will probably be able to save you some labor
costs if they do everything at once.

As to taking the abuse, the hobie 21s use this construction without
problems, they the owners are known for being brutal in heavy wind
    races.

1206.12HOBIE learn to Sail Day 1990AKOV11::KALINOWSKIMon Apr 23 1990 10:2828
The 1990 fleet 28 (North Atlantic fleet) learn to sail day will be
saturday, may 19th from 10 am to dark at long pond in East Freetown
    Mass.

This is a chance to learn how to use your Hobie to it's fullest. You
can learn how to set the rig, or how to sail your cat, what is involved
with racing, and allows you to practice a couple of starts.

There will be experts to answer any questions you may have about
catamarans. This is a great place to learn or to improve your skills
    and the price is free.

The area is a beautiful lake with a huge grass field to set your boat up on
before taking it out. More information can be had from Steve Latham,
    Fleet Commadore at 508 993-0867.

Directions: Take 128 or 495 south to Route 24 South to rt 140
South. Take exit 8 (Chace Road, East Freetown, Assonet). Follow
Chace road 1/4 mile east to intersection of the county road
(Shoppig Center on your right). Turn left onto County Road.
Take the first right (1/8 mile) onto dirt road directly across
from Fire Station. Follow dirt road to Beach. Hobie "H" signs will
    be posted along the way.

       Hope to see you there.

Just a reminder that the Hobie learn to sail day is this saturday.
There is no charge, and the lake water was nice and warm last weekend.

The directions are in .12 above. Whether you just bought your first
Hobie, or you want to learn how to set yours up properly, or you want
to learn how to race ( There will be practice starts to allow you to get
all those cobwebs out of your brain), Come on down.

Senior fleet members will be there to share their tricks with you.

    Hope to see you there.

For anyone interested, Hobie Cat Div 12, the NE Nacra Association
and NEMA are sponsering a Rick White Catamaran Racing school in New
    Bedford on July 21-27.

Rick White's school is patented upon the Canadian Olmypic Racing
school. Rick has over 40 National titles. Rick has over 17 National
champions as past students. Guest speaker will be none
other than Randy Smythe, Catamaran racing hero extrodinare.

The class will begin Sunday evening, followed by 4 days of racing
starts, tacks, classes and evening reviews. On friday is the graduation
test race. I have talked to people who have taken the course and they
    are very positive on it.

The class is limited to 20-30 boats. Cost is $340 per person. There
will be camping at the site. The next day starts the Buzzard Regetta,
one of the largest Hobie events of the season. If you are looking for
a killer vacation racing learning to race, this is it.

For more information, contact John Smith in Westport Mass, or send me
e-mail, as I have a lot more literature at home.
