1199.0. "Buzzards Bay sailors" by ESKWYR::YOUNG () Mon May 08 1989 13:22

Ahoy there! I'm a new noter (discovered conferencing last wk.).
Working at MRO3 as a temp. as the real estate market is so great.
My husband & I have an O'Day 27 that we keep at Kingman Marine in
Cataumet, nr. Pocasset or just No. of W. Falmouth. The boat went
into the water last week. Last yr. we had a slip--this yr. it's
a mooring (a real hardship!). Does anyone know where we can buy
an inverter--cheap? We were at the Boat show and know of a place
in S. Boston (?), but it'll cost abt. $1200. We day-sail over to
Marion/Mattapoisett a lot or down to Quisset. This is our 2nd yr.
w/"Gail Warnings"--planning on negotiating THE HOLE so we can cruise
to Mahrtha's Vinyahd this yr. and Cuttyhunk. Does anyone else sail
in our area of the world? Bassett's Island is a nice anchorage
and within spitting distance--also The Chart Room Restaurant is
pretty well known and very good. BTW, isn't it the FUGAWI TRIBE?
You know, the one Johnny Carson always refers to. RSVP, particularly
if you sail in my neck of the woods.

                                 Smooth sailing,
                                 Gail Young

We have been sailing out of Marion for several years now. We started
with a Cape Dory Typhoon, moved to a Ericson 25+ and this season
will be sailing a Bristol 29.9. We are looking forward to this
season since we expect the Bristol will stand up to Buzzard Bay
weather a bit better than the Ericson (too light weight
we felt). The Cape Dory did fine but at 19' was too small after
    a couple of seasons.

Where does one anchor/moor as a visitor in Cataumet if we wanted
to spend an evening at the Chart House?

Woods Hole is not too tricky if you go through anywhere between an hour
before or an hour after slack tide. Remember to check the currents
on the other side as they can be quite strong. Going against them
can cost you a lot of time.

I have a friend who is an O'Day fan and keeps his boat in your area.
    Ever hear of Ernie Starratt?

1199.2Sittin' on the DEC of the BayESKWYR::YOUNGTue May 23 1989 14:1424
Sorry, I've been out of touch--been in touch with UK_Sailing a lot.
Anyway, what is Ernie's O'day named? What is yr. vessel named?
Kingman Marine is where we have a mooring now--had a slip last yr
and that's exactly where The Chart Room is located. Order lobster
bisque if it's the soup du jour and definitely order the banana
cream pie!! Kingman provides launch service from 8AM-8PM; their
shower/bathroom/laundry facilities are quite nice. Also have ice
and gas. You are a mile walk from Pocasset Ctr. where there's a Cumberland
Farm, hardware store, pizza/grinder place and Marie's (does breakfast
& lunch--another one on Rt 28A). Kingman monitors Channel 16.
Parker's Boat Yard is also on Red Brook Harbor--not sure of what
Channel they're on--but it's a spartan marina. Kingman also has
a woman's clothing shop and a gift shoppe. We really like it there.
Marion is a nice place to cruise, as is Mattapoisett. We tend to
drop the hook at the same area in Marion. My daughter goes to The
Fay School in Southboro. The head of the lower school, Mary Martin,
has a Tartan '37 (?) and one of the science teachers, Lily Goldfarb,
also has a sailboat parked @ Marion. I forget their boats' names.
If you need to know anything more abt. Kingman, etc. give a shout.
I'm also on DTN 297-5117. Smooth sailing-

Hi Gail,

There are some stink-potters that read this file also and I
happen to be one of them. Thanks for the good recommendations for
Pocasset as I live there year round. Kingman is just around the
corner as my boat "ANZO" hangs on a mooring in Barlows Landing
right at the north end channel turn by Bassets. What mooring
number is the "GAIL WARNINGS" on at Kingman?

1199.4SMALL WORLD, ISN'T IT?ESKWYR::YOUNGWed Jul 05 1989 14:3526
    Hi Norm,

Guess I've been busy here at DEC and hadn't looked at NOTES for
a while. Went to boat on Sat. 7/1 and spent day anti-mildewing
(Does Ivana Trump ever do that?). On Sunday my husband and friends
and I finally went to the Vineyard. Remember Sunday when it was
rocking and rolling out there with 3 foot plus waves? From Wing's
Neck Light to the entrance of Lake Tashmoo, it took us 4 hrs.!
We sailed through the HOLE both ways! Dunked the railing a couple
of times heading over--great fun and no clouds! Trip home on Monday
was less eventful. Only had our jib up and were still doing 5-6
knots. We're out on O4 at Kingman. Directly in front of the fuel
dock; looking into marina as if coming from Bassett's, we're just
to the right of ANGEL, or should I say starboard?! We do the North
end channel also. I personally put Gail Warnings up on mud last
yr. my first time taking her thru that way--missed the red can at
the dog leg. Just as we were pulling the main to catch the wind
to rock us off our local friendly harbormaster stopped by, surveyed
that we had the situation in hand and made an off-hand inquiry abt.
trying to take a "short-cut"! We'll be down next weekend. Do you
commute every day to DEC? What site do you work at? What kind
of power boat do you have? Give a holler back on notes. Promise
    to be more attentive!

    Safe sailing--Gail

   Gail,

Guess who else does not read the notes file on a regular basis?
I found your boat when I was heading into Kingman for some fuel.
They are (WHEW) only $1.78 per gallon this year. Maybe it is time
to consider a sail boat. Currently I have a 35 foot sport fish
called "ANZO". Also if you happen to hear 'Harbor Mooring' on the

VHF that is me also as I run a mooring sales and service business
down there.
Yes I do commute each day to Marlboro on Northboro Road.

Hope to see you on the GAIL WARNING one day.

1199.6Moorings in Mattapoisett/Marion..???CURIE::CURRANThu Jul 20 1989 16:0714
Question for you Buzzards Bay folks... Do any of you know the
availability of moorings in Mattapoisett for a ~30' sailboat?
I have been sailing a Hobie Cat in the
    Vineyard/Cuttyhunk/Westport/Mattapoisett area
and am planning to move up to a more family oriented sailboat.

Mattapoisett would be my first choice for mooring depending on
availability. Also, what about Marion as 2nd choice??

    Any insight would be appreciated.

    /Thanks

1199.7Moorings in M/MESKWYR::YOUNGMon Jul 24 1989 10:2611
Not familiar with avail/$ of moorings in that neck of the woods.
A friend of a friend has a boat in Westport. Easy access to Vineyard.
Suggest you look in NYNEX Boat directory (very handy and getting
bigger very yr.) If you don't have a copy, call NYNEX--they're
usually free. Also, some of the chandleries (or is it chandlereys?)
carry current Boat Almanacs with info on marinas. Could always
just drive around the general area in which you want to be and make
    inquiries. Good luck.

1199.8Ships Passing in the NightESKWYR::YOUNGMon Jul 24 1989 10:4025
    Hi Norm/"Anzo"

Glad you stopped by on Sat. Next time, raft up and join us for
a chat. Peter got stove top to work (with new parts as opposed to
a new $800 custom stove!) so we can now offer Hot tea/coffee anytime.
Almost slept on boat last night and then drive to work this a.m.
with drop-off in Canton for Peter and in Framingham for Supertramp.
However, ended up driving back last night abt 8:45. Hated to
    leave-some sunset, wasn't it.

Went to Sippican Harbor on Sat and parked in front of Ram Island
(home has a large dish sitting on front lawn). Sunday we only motored
around Bassett's and came back to side facing Kingman for day of
    R & R and R&R (rest & relaxation and Rock 'n' Roll!) along with
lamb on the barby and some swimming. BTW, you have a nice boat.
Another Decie has a Triton called "Northwind" over at Barlow's
Landing--do you know Frank Alla? He also has a home 3 houses up
from Larry's Mkt. I've known Frank since 1964 (ouch, am I really
THAT old?) when we worked at Computer Control (computers were then
as large as buildings in those daze). Gotta go justify my salary!
See ya again I hope and thx for taking the time and effort to stop
by. Would like to hear more abt yr. other occupation.

    Smooth sailing, Gail

I THINK MOORINGS ARE FAIRLY EASY TO OBTAIN IN MATTAPOISETT, TRY
    MATTAPOISETT BOAT YARD.

I KEEP A SHIELDS AND A SABRE 36 IN MARION AND IT WAS A TWO
YEAR WAIT FOR THE MOORING FOR THE SABRE. BURRS KEEPS A LIST.
BARDENS DOES NOT. I SEE ADS FOR MOORINGS EVERY SUMMER IN
MARION BUT THEY PROBABLY ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FROM YEAR TO YEAR
WHICH MAKES IT HARD TO PLAN.

BURRS HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL, PROBABLY WORTH A CALL.

    GOOD LUCK THORNTON

Can anyone tell me of launch points for catamarans on Buzzards
Bay ? Every year I race down there I fall in love with the winds!

Last weekend we were racing from New Bedford and as usual, the
winds came up on Sunday and I was in my glory. I didn't even get
angry when the &*^%$ snot-glas rudder pin exploded, taking my 4th
    place position with it !

        Thanks

         john

P.S. Hey Bill, ask Rafe about my yelling starboard and putting him
out of contention on Saturday ! Ha Ha Ha, Tell him I only did it
because he get a motel room instead of camping and drinking beer
    with the rest of us!

John, I was over Rafe's last night and heard all about it. I'll make
sure to tell him next time he should go camping. Actually, he was
pretty pleased with his efforts this week-end.
